Chapter 12 - 11

El's mind raced as she sat across from Seth at the quiet restaurant. The romantic ambiance, with candlelight flickering and roses adorning the table, should have set the stage for a perfect evening. But the weight of her knowledge hung heavily, casting a shadow over her attempts to enjoy the moment. She needed to keep up the facade, for now.

Seth's concerned gaze pierced through her smile. "You look worried. Everything okay?"

El mustered a reassuring nod. "Just a bit tired, I guess. My gran isn't feeling too well."

"Has she seen a doctor?" Seth's genuine concern tugged at her heart, creating a dissonance between the person before her and the dark secrets she harbored.

"Not yet," El replied, mustering strength to hold his gaze. "But she has an upcoming check-up. I'm sure she'll be fine."

As they continued their dinner, El desperately tried to maintain the illusion of normalcy. But the constant reminders of Seth's other persona gnawed at her, causing her anxiety to rise. She needed a distraction.

"And how about your mother?" El inquired, hoping to steer the conversation away from dangerous territories.

Seth's face softened with a hint of nostalgia. "She's doing alright. Just the usual routine on the farm, you know. Not much excitement, but she's content."

El knew that Seth's mother lived a simple life, far away from the complexities of the city. Yet, beneath the calm exterior, the thought of Seth's actions lurked like a haunting melody.

Attempting to change the subject, El playfully teased him. "You must have been so bored without the internet. Just a country boy helping his mom. Quite the nerd, aren't you?"

Seth adjusted his glasses with a smile. "Guilty as charged."

As dessert arrived, El's unease began to wane. The sweet indulgence provided a momentary respite from her spiraling thoughts. She hoped that the pleasant atmosphere would veil her inner turmoil.

"So, are you going to the Halloween party?" Seth's question caught El off guard, and she struggled to hide her surprise.

"No, I'm not," she replied cautiously. "Why do you ask?"

Seth's nonchalant response took her aback. "Your friend mentioned it. She said you'd be staying in. Is that unusual for your last year?"

El's mind raced. How did he know? Had her cover been blown? She studied Seth's expression, searching for any signs of deception.

"And the elections too," he continued, his words piercing through her defenses.

El's heart skipped a beat. He was aware of the elections as well? Doubt gnawed at her, and she excused herself abruptly, feigning a need for water.

Inside the bathroom, El leaned against the sink, her mind in turmoil. She had to regain control, to remind herself of her purpose and the greater mission at hand. Taking a deep breath, she confronted her reflection in the mirror. It was time to face the truth and act accordingly.

Opening her bag, El retrieved the small spyware device. Holding it delicately between her fingertips, she steeled herself for what was to come. With determination fueling her actions, she carefully implanted the device, knowing it held the key to unlocking the truth.

Returning to the table, El observed Seth's finished dessert and his patient demeanor. He had no idea of the invisible web she had spun around him. With a mixture of sadness and resolve, El approached him from behind, her fingers grazing his neck in a tender gesture. As their lips met in a kiss, El's heart ached with the weight of her secret, knowing that the truth she sought lay just a fingertip away.
