Chapter 2 - Her Name Is Tang Ning

"Ahhh… Go away! Go away! Don't bite me… Ugh… Help, help… Ahhh… Father… Help me…"

The young girl's tragic cries were filled with helplessness and terror. She was desperately trying to shove the rats off her body when she suddenly felt a rat crawling inside her clothes. No, perhaps there were two…

She was crying hysterically, jumping around, shaking her ragged clothes. Her attempts to shake out any rats from underneath her clothes all in vain. As she jumped around barefoot, she could not avoid stepping on the soft, warm, and hairy bodies of the rats. That ghastly sensation put her in endless fear and despair.

"Go away… Go away… Ahhh… Ahh… Father… Father, save me…"

Shrieks of terror and helplessness could be heard from the small black hut. The young girl's cries continued non-stop, but the only response to her screams was the squeaking of rats, as well as the rats that were incessantly jumping on her no matter how hard she tried to brush them all off.

The Shadow Mercs, who had poured the two bags of rats into the hut, were listening to the girl's blood-curdling screams and the squeaking of the rats. It sent a chill down their spines.

As grown men, they were not usually afraid of one or two rats. But the two bags had contained more than a hundred of them! Just the thought of it gave them made their hair stand on end.

The Shadow Mercs could not bear staying on the roof any longer. They gave each other a knowing look and then retreated to rest under a tree, some distance away from the hut.

"Who in the world came up with this idea? Damn, it's downright disgusting." One of the Shadow Mercs lamented while rubbing the goosebumps on his arm.

Another Shadow Merc said, "The Tang family's eldest daughter grew up in comfort and luxury. I'm guessing she's never even seen a rat in her life, not to mention a hundred of them." He could not help but ask, "Now that she suddenly has all those rats as companions, do you think she will die of fright?"

One of his companions looked over at the small black hut, and said coldly, "Our only concern is to carry out the tasks and take our money. We do as we are instructed by the boss. If someone wants her to die from the torment of her own fears, then she shall die from the torment of her own fears."

He paused before continuing, "Even if she doesn't die of shock or from the rats biting her, she won't be able to hold out for more than three days. If the rat bites are not treated in time, she will die sooner or later anyway."

"There's no more screaming. She can't be dead already?" It seemed like the shrill cries for help, and wailing had indeed stopped. The Shadow Mercs turned to look at one another.

One of them spoke, "Do we go take a look now?"

Another Shadow Merc answered, "Just a bunch of dead rats and a dead body, what's there to see? Even if she were to die of terror or bites, she's not done dying yet. We'll wait until tomorrow! Yes, tomorrow, we'll go take a look." His eyes were filled with loathing and disgust as he spoke. If they went in to take a look inside the hut at this time, it would probably spoil their appetites.

The Shadow Mercs were right. The young girl was dead. She died in fear, helplessness, and despair. She was literally frightened to death. In her seconds of torturous last few breaths, she was tightly hugging herself, her head buried between her knees in despair.

The eldest daughter of the Tang family, Tang Ning, was dead.

A moment right after the last breath escaped her lips, as a rat scurried onto her head, she suddenly moved again. Waving her hand wildly, brushing off the thing unknown to her that was on her head, she burst out in anger.

"Damn it! What is that!"

Tang Ning jumped up. She was stunned as she woke up to the incessant noise of the rats, squeaking and screeching. Without further ado, she scowled and tore off the ragged coat on her body. She scrunched the torn coat in her hands and used it to lash at the rats.

"How dare you climb onto my head! You're all looking for death!"
