Curiosity glimmered in Hazel's eyes. "Elaborate," she requested.
Being curious was a good sign. Will hadn't seen much of that from her lately. He tried to think of the best way to explain it.
"People don't care who they hurt as long as it serves their own interests. Their mistakes always end up dragging other people down with them. I have never met anyone who doesn't fit that mold aside from you."
Himself included. Will had been selfish from the moment he had something to live for. He found a treasure in Hazel and wanted to hoard her all for himself at any cost. Now she was paying the price for it.
"…I think you have the wrong impression of me," she said slowly. "I'm as selfish as anyone else. Because my selfishness benefits you, you don't see it that way. I cared more about keeping you and the happiness we had than I did about the people you hurt to make it happen."
