Eva's heart beat erratically. No one had ever said they needed to see her before.
John had gone through a near-death experience and after surviving it that was what he wanted first? To the point of driving for three days while still in a state of shock?
"Why me?" she squeaked.
Family or closer friends would make a lot more sense than her. They had only met a couple of months ago and most of their contact was over the phone. She shouldn't be special to him.
"Because you're you," he said as if it should be obvious. "Warm, talkative, insightful, witty, and kind. I…I'm in love with you, Eva. That's why I needed to see you first."
Thirty-one years on this earth and no man had ever told her he loved her. Now she was hearing it from someone in the middle of a mental breakdown. Quite possibly the least romantic time ever.
But weren't there stories she had read like this? Someone in danger thinks of the one they love and somehow happens to get saved by them. It was a popular trope.
