Sheffield hadn't given any indication one way or the other but if Hazel had been that upset…there was a decent chance she was upset not only because of what she read about Thornton but what she read about her husband as well.
Would sharing this information condemn him or spare his life? Should John mention that he met her and that she had defended her husband or would it only get him killed faster?
"I never meant to upset her," he said quietly, deciding to go for it. "I wanted her to be happy. That's why I never planned to tell anybody about you. So she could keep living the life she loved."
At the very least it perplexed Sheffield. That would buy John some time to come up with a better plan.
"You're lying. How would you know anything about her? Did you have her followed?" he demanded, showing more emotion in his voice than he had this entire time.
