Chapter 4 - Zone-Off

The Arisen burned between the buildings as Zeke zoomed closer on his motorbike. His weapons were ready, hanging from his belt.

Priests used a multitude of weapons from light to heavy. Heavy weapons were usually utilised in large-scale battles. In duels like this, only two tools came into use.

Zeke slid to a halt, killed the engine and dashed up a fire escape. He rose higher and higher alongside the flaming giant. The Arisen raised both fists and brought them down, drawing a trail of explosions northwards.

It still frustrated him that despite being able to control the damage by killing Arisen, they still couldn't prevent it.

The heat was nearly unbearable, had it not been for the multiple layers of heat-control fabric in his clothes. His face, neck and hands still burned, though.

When Zeke got to the roof, the Arisen noticed him and wheeled around, raising and shooting its palms towards him. Bursts ripped everything around him but him. The talisman protected him. He'd come to call it that. He was never told where the power of it came from, but he was thankful that he had it.

This was the primary weapon of a Priest. It defended them from the Bursts. By some reason, Zeke's talisman never wore out like the others'.

The building he'd been on was torn to bits. Only a single column where he'd been standing and a few more pillars rose out of the ground.

"Clear!" came Amar's voice over the radio in Zeke's ear.

"Clear!" called Shig.

Zeke grinned at the flaming giant, who stared in confusion at how its attack had done nothing to him.

"You're finished," Zeke said and drew out his second weapon.

The kunai. It trailed a string into a reel on his belt. And this string had a row of paper with inscriptions made in an ancient language. Apparently, these inscriptions dispelled the energy that held the Arisen together, causing them to fall apart.

And he hurled it at the giant. It roared, sending another row of Bursts towards him along the ground. But the kunai didn't slow or falter. It found is target square in the forehead.

And Zeke waited. And waited.

But nothing happened.

"What?" Zeke muttered, confused and getting worried.

This had never happened before. The kunai always managed to kill the Arisen.

So why wasn't it working now?

"Zeke," came Kirei's voice. "Massive energy build-up inside the Arisen. It's draining power from somewhere."

Zeke's first glance was thrown at the string trailing form his belt.

He grabbed it and ripped the kunai out of the giant's head before leaping off the pillar he stood on and coming to a rolling landing on the next slab.

"Amar!" Zeke shouted. "Zone this section off, now! This battle is going to take a lot longer than we expected."
