Chapter 44 - Noisy

The sun is shining high up in the sky, so I think it's almost afternoon. Looking outside the window, I can see the streets being filled with crowds of people, slowly getting denser as lunch time approaches.

From what I know, there are multiple restaurants and cafes in Lindis, which people usually go to, to have their lunch. Despite how poor the city's appearances may suggest it is, it seems like people do frequent restaurants and cafes.

I can also see some stalls selling fruits and vegetables. At least, I think that's what they are? I've never seen fruits and vegetables before, so I'm not too sure.

There's also multiple clothes stores and blacksmith workshops in Lindis, I think. I don't see any from here, but I remember Fluffy mentioning those. This city seems to have the basic, essential stuff for daily life. But that's about it.

...Fluffy... Why am I thinking about him now? Somehow, my thoughts just went in this direction...

I forced myself to smile, and shake my head. I don't want to think about that now, thinking about sad things isn't good.

"...Cheer up, Mimin."

"Uwa! Mina..."

Mina started head patting me from behind for some reason. This is... This feels way too good! It's not just Maria, even Mina's headpats are good...

*Growl*

...What is that sound? I've never heard that sound before. It's coming from Lance, Sebas, and Mina, so I turn to face the three of them.

"That reminds me, it's time for lunch."

"Yeah! Let's go downstairs!"

Lance practically rushes out of the room and disappears from sight, and Sebas walks out soon after. Mina offers her hand to me, while looking away from my face.

"Let's go... Together?"

"Sure!"

She's trying hard to get along with me, isn't she? For how shy she looks, it must be difficult for her... I reach out my hand to hold her's and smile, and she leads the way slowly.

----------

Exiting the room, we turned right and walked down a narrow passageway, and climbed down a flight of stairs. I can already hear noise coming from below, chattering about what they're going to have for lunch.

"We're definitely going to be having apples later! Maybe even oranges, if we're lucky..."

"I want butter toast instead. That's better than apples and oranges!"

"You think we're getting milk later?"

"I hope so! It's been a while since we had that!"

...What are they talking about? So much chattering, and so much noise. All the things that I'm not familiar with... I've only heard about these things a long time ago.

As I followed behind Mina, leading me down the stairs, the noise slowly dies down for some reason. More and more children turned to look at me, stopping their conversations about lunch with one another.

As Mina brings me to a corner of the room, away from everyone, the chattering starts again. This time, it seems to be about me. They're all talking at once, and I can't even tell what is it about me, that they're all talking about. It doesn't feel nice being the center of attention, and not understanding anything.

"Ah, Mimin, your grip... It hurts."

Ah, I didn't realize that I'm hurting Mina. I think being the center of attention is starting to get to me.

"I-I didn't mean to. I'm sorry..."

"It's okay... Don't be afraid, they're all... nice people."

I take a look around the room for now. Immediately, I notice that the lighting in the room isn't the greatest. The lights are bright enough in here, it's just that it's much brighter outside, compared to here. Then again, this could just be normal and I don't know that, since I've only lived outdoors until now.

As I questioned myself, a tall woman starts to approach me. At a glance, she seems to be around 170cm tall? Well, she's much taller than I am, that's for sure.

"You're awake. Just in time for lunch, too."

She has black, maybe brown hair, that just reaches her shoulders. I can't tell what her hair colour is, because of the lighting, but I think it's brown. Her irises are black colour, I think.

"How are you feeling now? Well, I'm sure you've already been asked that many times by now."

"Yeah, you're right. I'm fine. Thanks... Selena."

"Oh, so you already know my name? Then you probably know, I'm one of the people who runs this orphanage. It seems like you and Mina are getting along well."

As she says that, she turns around to face all the other children and gathered their attention.

"Everyone! This girl here is new to the orphanage. Her name is Mimin. Starting today, she's going to be living here with you guys. I hope everyone gets along well with her!"

Wait wait wait, I've already accepted to live here, in the orphanage, but shouldn't you ask me about that before you decide that yourself? Also, I don't remember ever telling you my name! I didn't hear Maria, Sen, and Arnold tell you about me either! How do you know my name? What else do you know about me?

"It's nice to meet you, Mimin!"

"Let's play together later, Mimin!"

"What kind of beastkin are you?"

"How do you have such a nice colour for your fur and your hair?"

"Your eyes have really weird colours!"

"Why are your eyes two different colours?"

Ah... Too much noise... I can't understand anything! How many of them are talking right now? This is too difficult! Why is everyone so excited about me anyway? Somebody help me!

Suddenly, a door at the other side of the room slams open, and a nice smell fills the entire room almost instantly. This smell... Is it the smell of meat? Why does it smell so nice? It's completely different from what I'm used to.

Before I noticed, most of the children are already rushing through the door. They're all shouting something about food and lunch now. I'm probably going to take a long time to get used to this chaos...

"Well, shall we go for lunch first? We'll discuss about other matters later."

Selena leads the way, and Mina holds my hand, following behind Selena and gently pulling me along. I'm just happy that all the attention on me is being redirected elsewhere...
