Chapter 49 - Birthday Banquet

Jasmine Xuan stared at Luna for a moment before bursting into laughter. Joanna curled her lips into a slight smile and drank some champagne from her glass.

"Veronica will surely throw a fit once she finds out Hero remarried again, and it isn't her," Jasmine said in a low voice.

Joanna scoffed in return and shook her head. She didn't dare to say it out loud since she thought Luna might not be ready to disclose her relationship with Hero.

"She must be really dumb if she thinks my brother will marry someone like her."

Luna thought she'd heard that name before then it dawned upon her. It was that same woman at the hospital, who she'd encounter when she first met Little Amber. Didn't that woman say Little Amber would have no choice but to listen to her in the future once she married Amber's father?

Her jaws hardened as she thought how Veronica tried to bully their Little Amber. Luna decided then to talk about it with Hero. She would never let that woman hurt her stepdaughter again. Just remembering the scene where Little Amber came crying towards her that time was enough to make her blood boil from anger.

'Calm down, Luna. No one will be able to bully Amber now when you're around,' she told herself.

"That's reassuring." Jasmine slightly nodded, "Someone like Veronica shouldn't be near with Amber."

Earlier, she heard that Hero was spotted with a woman. Jasmine thought it was her friend, Joanna; but the other guest mentioned that it was a woman she'd never seen or met before. Of course, she was curious and took a look by finding Joanna first. She just didn't expect that the unknown woman had managed to secure her place in Hero Li's life by being his wife.

"What about Amber though? Did she another tantrum when she found out Hero remarried?" she asked her friend confusedly. She knew that it would be hard for any woman to marry a man with extra baggage.

Jasmine Xuan took a side glance towards Luna trying to see her mood, but she only noticed the conflicting emotions reflected on Luna's eyes.

Joanna let out a laugh. Little Amber would be the last person Luna had to worry about.

"Ay, would you believe it? That our little demoness took a liking towards our Luna here. Since she met her, Amber is behaving well unless she wakes up not seeing Luna by her side."

Jasmine was once again speechless from shock. Hero remarrying was one thing, but taming the little demoness was a difficult task. How the heck did Luna manage to tame Little Amber?

Meanwhile, looking around them, Luna felt so out of place. She knew she shouldn't though. True, it wasn't her first time attending Jasper's birthday party, and he would usually invite her out to eat in advance, knowing he wouldn't be able to be with her on his special day.

At that time, they were both attending university; Luna had little pocket money with her. Although she was a Jiang, the monthly allowance she received from the Jiang family couldn't be compared to what Sienna and her siblings had.

Heh, her father was really stingy after all. She and her brother, Julian Jiang, were never really acknowledged by their father. Only the old Grandmother Jiang was kind enough to treat them fairly.

Jasper never asked her for a gift which made her feel guilty. Compared to his living standards, Luna felt like a peasant mixing with the nobility. She simply couldn't afford any present to give him. In the end, she felt miserable and useless; Jasper would only assure her that presents didn't matter as long as she was with him.

Such a sentimental woman that she was, Luna was moved by her ex-boyfriend's words. She really thought that as long as Jasper Mo believed and had faith in her, other's opinions didn't matter. How wrong she was to delude herself that Jasper wouldn't succumb to his own family's pressure to leave her.

Looking through the center of the banquet hall, a massive birthday cake could be seen, as well as VIP guests holding wine glasses laughing with each other.

If it was like the previous birthday parties she attended, Jasper would show up with his parents by his side. She would be ignored through the night, with only stolen glances given her way.

Luna held her glass tightly. She couldn't understand why they needed to hide their relationship. Was he ashamed of her?

She hadn't given it a thought before, but now that there would be no future for the two of them, Luna realized that they were never meant to be since the start. She, an illegitimate daughter from the Jiang family, would never be accepted by the Mo family.

Luna hated that her happiness was once again ruined because of her lineage. However, thinking about it, Hero probably knew by now what kind of family she came from.

Wasn't he bothered? Didn't he find it repulsive? Wasn't he afraid of what the public would say if they found out the kind of woman he married? What did he see in her anyway?

Luna forced the thoughts away to clear her mind. She only needed to focus on tonight's event, making sure she wouldn't fall under Aiko's schemes again. Rubbing her temple, she dearly wished that this party would end soon so she could lay her aching back on her comfy bed. She wasn't sure if her willpower to endure the night would be enough to protect her.

Her dog, Fluffy, must be enjoying this night more than her.

At this moment—when Luna was busy clearing her thoughts, she heard clicking noise from a pair of high heels. When she turned around to see who it was, her body straightened.

And for the first time since she found out she was pregnant, Luna felt like her morning sickness had come from the sight of Aiko walking towards her with a wide grin.
