Chapter 29 - The Accident

Luna rolled on her side, trying to figure out where she was. Then it dawned to her that she met Little Amber earlier. She suddenly jolted up from the bed and was surprised to see Hero sitting on a chair, looking at her with amusement in his eyes. She glanced on her side and saw the little girl already awake and playing with her doll.

As soon as Amber saw her awake, she crawled to Luna's lap and wound her little arms around Luna's neck.

"What's wrong? Did you sleep well?" Luna asked softly.

Amber nodded but didn't say anything as usual. She gave a confused look to her father before returning her attention to the woman that was holding her.

"Your phone keeps on ringing. Aren't you going to answer it?" Hero asked with an impassive face.

"Ohh…" He was right. Her phone was vibrating. Checking it, she saw several messages from her mother. She frowned as it was almost seven in the evening and realized she overslept.

Did something wrong happen to her mother? She dialed her mother's number and was startled when she heard someone crying at the other line.

"Mom, are you okay? Why are you crying?"

"Luna, come to the hospital, quick!" Her mother's voice sounded frantic.

Luna released herself from Amber's hold and gave her to Hero. Hero was bewildered by her actions. He knew something was up, and it probably wasn't good, based on Luna's expression.

"What happened? I thought you're feeling better now." Luna slipped on her shoes and took her bag from the table.

"No, it's not me. It's Julian!" her mother replied with a sob.

Amber, seeing that Luna was about to leave, ran towards the woman and grabbed Luna's free hand. She refused to be parted from her Aunty Luna, but the woman's hand was trembling in fear.

Luna felt a cold pit stirred in her stomach, cold sweat ran down the side of her face. Julian was supposed to be at home at this time. What could have happened to him?

"Why? What happened to him?" Luna asked. She dearly hoped that nothing serious happened to her brother, or else … No! She should believe that he was alright. She couldn't lose her only brother.

"I don't know, Luna." Her mother sobbed at the other end of the line. "Please, I don't know what to do right now."

The events that unfurled next was almost in a blur when Luna found herself dragged to the parking lot of the company by Hero, with Amber in his other arm.

"Get inside the car. I'll bring you to the hospital," Hero said while he put his child on the car seat. Luna was about to refuse but remembered the situation. She had no time to waste as in this moment, her little brother needed her.

Luna couldn't even remember how did she manage to stay calm while they were on their way to the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital, the operating room was already closed, her mother walking back and forth in panic.

"Mom, how's my Julian? What's the situation?" Luna's face was white as a sheet. Her mother greeted her with tears in her eyes and clung to her eldest child in despair.

"Bad," Elaine said. "He was engaged in an accident when he tried to save a young boy from a speeding car. Luna, the doctors said he was in a critical situation. What should we do?" she continued to wail in Luna's embrace.

It took a lot of courage for Luna not to breakdown and cry for her mother's sake. She felt her strength leaving her body, but she refused to give up. She had to be brave and strong for her family. If something were to happen to her brother, she was afraid that it would leave a big dent on her sanity and her life.

Meanwhile, Hero called his sister to pick up Amber from the hospital before checking the situation about Luna's brother. The authorities hadn't visited Luna's family to document what transpired to her younger brother.

He supposed he should leave and let Luna deal with it, but the look on her face made him think that she would not last long.
