Captain Mathis immediately wrote a letter directly addressed to Commander General Emrys. He detailed what had happened during the day on the letter and requested for a team from the fifth battalion to be sent immediately. The letter also contains information on the General Rozen's sudden outburst and his abnormal change. He suspects that this is not a simple matter and that something big was brewing on the horizon.
A knock on the door brought him out from his reverie, "come in."
The door opened and one of his men came in to report. He was the same man who was assigned to watch General Rozen's moves. "What is the general doing right now?"
"After the incident, he had returned to his room and locked himself in. I've heard some furniture being broken inside but aside from that nothing was amiss," The man answered.
"Is he still inside his room?" Mathis asked as he kept the papers on his table.
"Yes, he has been there ever since," the man once again answered.
"Alright, continue to watch him and report to me immediately if you discover something suspicious," the captain sent the man away while he pondered on the things that had happened so far, from the very beginning. He would have another sleepless night.
Night has fallen and after all the precautionary measure was in place, Dreigh was finally able to relax for a little while. No unusual movements from General Rozen happened but the night was just starting. He closed his eyes to rest for the mean time and didn't expect to be suddenly awakened.
Darkness has slowly covered the sky as the night became deeper. Only the sound of animals awake can be heard with the rustling of leaves being blown by the wind. Dreigh awoke to something, his senses were telling him that something was amiss. He looked around his room but did not see anything. He remained awake for a few minutes and could feel that something or someone was looking at him.
"Who are you?" He asked the space before him. There was silence and the moment he thought that no one would answer. He heard a hoarse voice coming from a corner of his room.
"Arthur," the voice answered. It was gritty and coarse, a clear sign that the one speaking to him was not used in talking. It was as if he had never talked for a very long time.
"Why are you here?" Though Dreigh can't see the man, he still looked to the right corner of the room where the voice came.
The man did not speak but Dreigh knew that he was there, watching him. He couldn't help but frown at the silence. He was about to get up when a cold wind blew through the room and a man appeared at the foot of his bed. At that moment, the moonlight illuminated through the uncovered window and revealed the man's countenance.
Dreigh's eyes widened at the identity of the man in front of him, this was the first time where he couldn't contain the shock from showing on his face. It was the man who nearly claimed his life. Those deep green eyes were unforgettable.
"What are you doing here?" Dreigh felt apprehension at being face to face with the mysterious remnant once again. The man did not talk but continued to stare at him. He was becoming uncomfortable at the stare and had subconsciously labeled the man as weird.
'What does he want?' He asked himself because it seems that the man has no intention of answering him. He kept on looking at him in complete quietness. This went on for far longer than Dreigh had expected.
"You are not him, and yet I clearly… clearly saw that you are him," the man, Arthur, suddenly spoke with clear confusion in his eyes.
Arthur could still remember that day clearly, he was about to kill this man but then he saw a glow which was familiar to him and yet not at the same time. He had last seen that glow three years ago, it was the last time he saw it and at the time when he thought he had forgotten it, it suddenly appeared in front of him.
The shock was too much to handle, his mind became a mess instantly and all he could do was look at Dreigh with shock and he left. 'It was impossible! I saw him fall!' His mind cannot accept the fact that he would saw a glow similar to his first master. He wandered around until he came to a decision of finding Dreigh and confirm his suspicion.
Dreigh was confused by the man's words. "What do you mean?" He collected himself and once again asked hoping for a clear answer.
But instead of answering, Arthur asked another question, "What's your name?"
Dreigh gave the man another look before he answered, "I'm Dreigh Straut."
"Not the same name," Dreigh heard the man mumbled to himself. "It's not him but why does it feel like it is him?" he continued to talk to himself as he bowed his head and his eyebrows furrowed. He was currently confused and lost as to what he should do next.
"Who are you talking about?" Dreigh asked. He also wanted to understand what this man was talking about.
"You don't have to know. It's none of your business." Arthur harshly answered. He doesn't like anyone talking about his master. It was a sore topic that he doesn't want to talk about.
Dreigh saw the intense reaction from the man and did not push further. Another silence invaded the space and without Dreigh noticing, Arthur suddenly disappeared. All he saw was the window being opened by a strong wind.
He did not understand what had happened and because of that he remained awake for the rest of the night. 'Arthur' he repeated the man's name in his mind and searched his memories if he had met a person with this name but he found nothing, even his appearance did not match any of the costumers they had at Crescent Moon. The man's look while they were talking was akin to a lost a child, no trace of the killer he had seen on the battle field could be seen.
The more he thought about it, the more he had questions and the more questions he had the more that he wanted to find the answers to it. The small event kept him awake and thinking until the sun had already lightened the sky.
That morning Captain Mathis visited them and talked to Dreigh, since he was the de facto leader recognized by the remaining remnants. During their conversation, all remnants were present in case something happened.
"By the way captain, I would like to suggest that we all take a leave and return to our families. If we will only be confined to this place and wait for the threat on our lives to come knocking on the door, it would be best to avoid any more future troubles." The remnants all looked at the captain in anticipation.
"I would like for you to leave too but the Commander General Rozen's permission is needed for you to be able to leave this place," he answered sadly. Although he wanted to help, he can't break the chain of command just because he wanted to do the right thing. "But don't worry, I've already sent a letter to Commander General Emrys asking for help regarding this matter."
They knew it was a long shot but they can't help but still hope. They were taken away from their families and forced to attend this military institute to train and become soldiers but it did not happen. Instead they were thrown into a place unknown to them. Many of them had died on that bloody battlefield as sacrifice to those soldiers who were praised for their bravery but in reality they were a bunch of cowards, And after everything they had been through, they were thrown into this old place and was being guarded.
Although they had freedom, it was not true freedom and now they are faced with a death threat just because they were remnants, just because they were different from the common people. They've endured so much and they can't endure more. Like a normal human being, they had their limits too.
"We understand captain," Dreigh nodded, he understood that even though the captain wanted to help them, he cannot move freely because of his position. All they could do was wait. "We will wait then captain, I just hope that the help you requested will come before a disaster happens."
Captain Mathis left after that talk and the remnants were left in a solemn state. The moment they have entered this institute everything has been a mess. Everything that had happened were like a whirlwind, it happened so fast that they did not even have a time for break.
"Guess we're all going to die here," one remnant can't help but exclaim. "Do you really think that that captain would help us? I bet he is like the others, acting all righteous but in the end they would end up abandoning us," he added in anger.
Murmurs started to become loud inside the room but no one stopped them. They were feeling all the same.
"If you want to wait here, wait here, but me, I'm leaving this place even without their permission!" the man who spoke left the room followed by other remnants.
Dreigh watch as these remnants left one by one. He did not stop them, it was not his obligation to change their minds. That day, some remnants left the place in secret and did not return.
