Chapter 5 - Chapter Five

Rielen woke up to Hyla building up her fire again in the early dawn.

She looked around, confused for a second, before realizing where she was, then placed Eon's stones back on the bedside table and stretched.

"Good morning, Miss," Hyla smiled.

Rielen was unaccustomed to being addressed as Miss, it sounded strange to her ears.

She washed her face with the water in the bowl Hyla provided her, then took the towel she presented.

"Today, we are to start the day with Basic Magic," Hyla told her.

'You will be in a class with the other girls. Miss Trina has been assigned to show you the way."

Rielen could only nod, as Hyla helped her dress into another nice dress.

"Hyla, I don't know how to handle being called...." Rielen was quickly shushed.

"You are a Selected who has magic. You are to be addressed as Miss until another title has been bestowed upon you, or you are married."

Rielen gave up. Hyla brushed out her hair and fixed it up for her.

'I guess I will have to get used to my new place here,' Rielen thought.

'I wonder what Mother would think of me being called Miss, like I was some magistrate's daughter.'

Remembering her mother put a sour note to her morning. "Am I allowed to write home?" she asked hopefully.

"Only as Lord Grend allows. Unfortunately, that is not often granted." Hyla looked at her with pity in her eyes.

Before Rielen could ask anymore questions, a knock came at the door.

Hyla answered the door, then stepped back as she said, "Miss Trina is here to escort you."

Rielen looked at herself one last time in the mirror and walked to Trina's side.

"Good Morning, Rielen!"Trina greeted her.

"Breakfast is served in our Common Room. No boys!"

'Trina must be a morning person,' Rielen thought to herself. Trina was practically skipping down the hall ahead of her.

She was led to an expansive room with sofas and small tables. The other girls were already seated, eating a spread of food.

Servants came in and out to bring food and drinks.

'This is nice,' Rielen thought. 'Why did we have to eat with the boys? The better question is why are there no nice boys?

You would think the older ones would be nicer or at least try to get to know the only girls. I mean, that is only natural, right?

'I have so many questions, but it is always best to observe.'

She remembered her father explaining that observing first is always the right approach. All she had left of him were his teachings.

She swore to herself that she would make her family proud, even if she couldn't write to them to tell them. She would do it for Eon, too.

Compared to the night before, the girls were cheerful, and talked amiably with each other. They looked unguarded, unlike how they had looked at dinner the night before.

"Good morning," Rielen said as she sat down.

The girls all exchanged greetings as she hungrily dug into her own breakfast.

"Since the boys have to attend Basic Magic first, we get to have a leisurely breakfast," Trina explained.

"They have breakfast after their first class," Nya pitched in from across the table.

"They complain, but the teachers decided that it was best to separate us this way." Rielen nodded her head.

"After Basic Magic, we have Exercise, and then lunch. They give us time to bathe before lunch. We have to eat lunch and dinner with the boys though." Fiore said, with her mouth half full.

"After lunch, we are broken down into our individual courses. Fiore and Allora have fire magic, Nya has water magic, and I have wind magic." Trina said.

"They will probably test you on your basic knowledge as well since you're new. I will escort you to dinner as well. Your attendant should escort you to your individual courses."

"I appreciate your help," Rielen managed between bites.

The conversation drifted to other topics, such as the flowers in bloom this season. Her thoughts were too muddled to keep up, though.

The other girls seemed to be giving her space. She appreciated the efforts they were making to make her feel comfortable.

Before long, a bell rang in the distance, and Trina led Rielen to a giant classroom filled to the ceiling with books.

The girls took seats at the front of the classroom and pulled books out of the bags they were carrying.

Hyla had passed Rielen a similar bag as she and Trina left the dining hall. It seemed like each of the girls had their own attendant.

'Getting used to this new world is going to be difficult,' Rielen lamented to herself.

'How am I suddenly supposed to handle having people attend to my every need?'

She was an independent child and preferred to do everything on her own. Her mother would often laugh when she found her doing some chore or another by herself.

She would always pat her head, and wonder how she was lucky to have such an independent child.

An older male walked into the room, and the conversations the girls were having stopped, letting a hush fall over the room.

"Good morning, ladies. Ah, I see we have a new addition. We are finally starting to look like a proper class."

He set a bag down on the desk and placed a mountain of books on Rielen's desk.

"Please read these books in your spare time. Your attendant will bring them to your room after class. My name is Professor Russel Wend. You may call me Professor or Mr. Rend."

I nodded, and he began a lecture on the basics of magic.
