Chapter 15 - Doctor

Is Miss Musca here? The doctor would like to have a word with you.

The weary mother sighed as she followed the nurse down the hall.

She felt guilty as recalled the scene where her daughter shook the poor girl.

'What kind of fey shakes someone who's clearly in pain after they asked for a doctor?'

It was like something from a nightmare. A small child in pain begs for a doctor. The person closest to her rushes over, trying to see what's wrong. The shaking only makes things worse.

Just before the child drops into unconsciousness, her eyes open. They seem cloudy or unnatural, with the pupils separating into three points. The girl who couldn't see weakly raised her head towards the person, her nonexistent gaze shooting through them.

With the raspiest voice she ever heard in her life, the girl spoke. You could see how much it hurt for her to say those words. The battle it must have been, and the determination it must have taken.

"I... blame you... for... this."

Then as if her job was done, the girl went limp. And her daughter screamed.

*Shiver

She was definitely going to keep them away from each other from now on.

The nurse opened the door and they saw the Doctor scribbling in a notebook made of leaves.

The room had several alcoves and drawers for tools and medicine. There were two chairs as well as the examination table. The entire place was made of wood and items taken from the humans in secret.

"Hmm? Ah, yes."

The doctor said as she closed the book.

"Thanks again!"

She called out to the nurse who was leaving.

*thunk

The door went as it shut snugly within its frame.

"Now, Mrs. Musca, please sit down."

She gestured towards one of the chairs.

"Is she gonna be alright, Doctor?"

The mother asked as she took a seat.

The Doctor grimaced.

"I'm not sure, to be honest."

"What do you mean you're not sure?"

The mother raised her voice slightly in panic.

"I meant long term. Short term, she's fine. Woke up a few minutes after she came in, and we were able to finish her examination."

"Examination? I thought she needed to be treated, not examined! She clearly wasn't in any condition to run any tests!"

The Doctor raised a hand.

"Let me explain. I did try to find the cause of the problem, but there wasn't anything to find."

"She passed out in front of your clinic! How is that fine?!"

"That's the problem. Her results on most of the tests were actually above average."

She started to review her notes again.

"I'd expect these kind of results from a fighter in their prime, not a little girl."

"Not just that, I double checked my instruments on some of my patients that I have previous records on and found no change. Their accurate."

"So what, her body's over-clocking itself or something?"

"That's not it either. The results I mentioned earlier were from when she was passed out. They actually increased further after she woke up."

"If the results from before were from an average fighter, then these would be from a top-class fighter with the best training available. But still, her body is acting as if it's in a weakened state."

"W-what does that mean?"

"Judging from the scry's..."

She said as she turned the page.

"It seems like the humans performed some kind of operation to implant several artificial organs and musculature inside her."

*gasp

"I-is there anything we can do?"

The Dcotor shook her head.

"I'm afraid not. In order to figure out what's wrong I'd need to do an operation on the affected areas and that would put her life at risk."

"Maybe if I had or time or better equipment but even then..."

The Doctor let out a heavy sigh.

"I just don't know."

The Doctor opened the door for the mother and said to her as she left

"I've done what I can, just... try to make sure she enjoy's herself."

*Thunk!
