Chapter 3 - Family meeting

My mother approaches our group and says "I don't understand what these creatures were thinking, they never stood a chance".

"I believe they saw our warriors leave months ago and could not hold back any longer" answers my grandfather "these dumb mutts always forget who is the ruler of this forest and why".

"At least now we don't need to go hunting" says a female carrying her axe dripping with blood. It's the one who was laughing while decapitating her enemies.

"I don't think their bodies are in a good condition to be eaten" answers my mother "our clan members don't know how to hold back at all, especially you Layla".

The female called Layla laughs loudly, "it isn't my fault these dogs are so feeble, at least I just take their heads, your father-in-law made a complete mess out of them".

"That's because us old folk are frustrated" says my grandfather "we should be battling against the demons alongside the beast king, instead we remain here waiting to die".

"Dad, don't be dramatic" answers my mother "you know we always keep two elder warriors in our domain, you just had bad luck".

My grandfather sighs and looks at us "you guys should enjoy your youth while it lasts, when you get old like me, they force you to remain in this forest of ours".

My mom drops her hammer on the ground and picks up my sister and carries her into her arms. The poor thing looks frightened, I was so focused on the battle I didn't even notice my siblings were scared at the sight of blood. Looking around most of the cubs were, I think that is the reason my mom didn't want us to come.

"Younglings have to get accustomed to the sight of battle, it will make them grow to become stronger warriors" says my grandfather while picking up my brother "look at this young cub, he is overcome by fear".

Layla grabs me with one hand and points at me "this one doesn't seem scared, sister you might have a true warrior here", she laughs while holding me in her arms.

I see, this bloodthirsty lady is my aunt. Now that she mentions it I'm not really feeling anything special after spectating the battle, more than afraid I'm awed by the prowess of our clan.

"What's wrong with the younglings?" asks our second grandpa while coming closer to us.

"Nothing elder Bern, just calming down the scared cubs" answers my other grandfather while glaring at grandpa Bern "Did you enjoy yourself out there? Lucky bastard".

"Dad, don't use that language around the kids" says my mother "it's your first time meeting them and you are already being a bad influence, that's the reason I kept them away from you these months".

"Come on Reina, no need to start arguing with your father now" interrupts grandpa Bern, then turns to look at the other elder "and you Artie should know better than to provoke your daughter".

"Sister, aren't you going to introduce us to your cubs?" asks aunt Layla while still holding me.

"I really didn't want them to meet you all this soon" answers my mom "I wanted them to enjoy their first year in tranquility", the she grabs me and my brother from our relatives and embraces the three of us "my poor children, I don't want them to become battle-crazed warriors like you".

"My daughter, you know it's their destiny to battle and triumph over our enemies" says grandpa Artie "why keep them away from their destiny?".

"Artie is right Reina" says grandpa Bern "my son… your husband is the strongest warrior our clan has raised in the last thousand years; his offspring are destined to follow after him".

This is the first time I hear about my father, looks like he's an impressive warrior.

"Fighting isn't their only path" answers my mom "there is so much more out there, and Bernard knows it, we talked about it before he left".

I imagine Bernard is my father's name. Both my grandpa Bern and grandpa Artie remain silent, aunt Layla just keeps looking at us.

"Sister, I want to play with my nieces" says my aunt "you can't keep them away from us anymore, from now on I'm going to be coming to your place often".

My mother sighs "I understand Layla, but no training them, not yet" then she gently drops us on the ground and says "my babies, I hope each one of you finds a path of your own, maybe you are too young to understand this now, but I want you to know that you are free to choose your future, I'm not going to allow anyone deciding your path for you, not even me", she looks towards the two elders while saying that last part.

Looks like there is something different about us siblings, I have many questions and no way to ask them. As of now I can barely communicate when I'm hungry, my first priority must be learning to speak.
