A loud beeping broke off my concentration from my studies. I turned down my music and went to grab the walkie talkie given to me by Hui Yin, my adviser. I pressed the silencer, set it back down on the table, and returned to yesterdays math homework.
"I know you can hear me. Get to the office" Hui Yin's voice rang through the walkie talkie in her usual demanding tone.
I slumped my shoulders in defeat and groaned. At this rate, my grades were going to drop, and there would go all of my hopes to live abroad. I walked over and pressed the button to speak
"You know, most teenagers play hookie to avoid school and work. I've never done that, so can't you reward me with a day off?"
"Now, Estera." Well that was a hard no. I packed all my books away in my book bag and tossed it aside.
I walked out of my bedroom door, and almost fell backwards as a group of guards rushed past. The halls were bustling with agents, police, guards, everyone that I grew up with basically. It was always like this around here. We're known as A.I.P.O, or as I call it, prison. It stands for "Artificial and Intelligent Paranormal Organization." We're an underground organization created by the government for the protection of all species, even ones only known to fairytales. I happen to be an irreplaceable gem to this place.
I began making my way to Hui Yin's office, avoiding all the chaos, practically doing parkour to be out of the way. I reached her door, and hesitated going in. Wait for it...3..2..1...
"Come in already" her voice demanded from the other side of the door. How she always knows i'm here, I have no idea. I let myself in, and laid down on the sofa. Hui Yin looked at me and sighed.
"You know I stuck my neck out for you." She glared at me.
"Oh please. What could I possibly have done this time" I shot her a look right back.
"You don't remember that mimic you were meant to bring in?"
"He was just a 5 year old orphan! Plus, he didn't even know, nor ever even used his abilities the entire time I visited him, so there was really no need to bring him in at such a young age." I guess that I should explain. Mimic's are beings that have the ability to memo copy your bodies data with a single touch, and morph their body with their targets DNA, basically becoming a clone. In simpler terms, they're like shape shifters, but their forms are limited to those of the human species.
"I know, it wont happen again" I hung my head. I still stand by my decision to let him go, but felt bad for disappointing her. Shes a human through and through, but if she had any supernatural abilities, it'd be the ability to guilt trip anyone to the core.
"Was that all you wanted to talk about, or can I get back to studying?" I inched my way to the door, hoping my scolding was enough for her, but wishes don't always come true and I've come to learn.
"Actually," She sifted through the mess of hoarded papers on her desk and grabbed a file. "You have a job to do."
