Chapter 14 - Embark!

[Ship Maintenance Hangar to Juno Terminal 'June': Derelict Light Transport 'Washington' logs heavily damaged due to age and neglect. Partial recovery follows]

First log of Captain Darren Long: Finally! We embark! Away from this overcrowded planet with its stinking polluted atmosphere. Towards our bright future! A new home among the stars! Really new, for this convoy. We're among the first hundred ships to colonize a new system! Star designation PDSSp J153259.96−003944.1. A red dwarf with sixteen planets, two of which are in the habitable zone. Even out beyond the border, we won't be alone! Though, that far out we'll likely be glad to have a neighbor. I'm excited! I really thank my good luck that our ticket was pulled in the colonization lottery!----

---Log of C---------------ong, after third jump: One of the ships in our convey, the 'Purity', didn't appear at the jump point with the rest of us. Either they aimed for different coordinates or...? The admiral assures us that such events happen, but are exceedingly rare and we have nothing to worry about. Crew is unsettled, but nobody on this ship knew anyone on the 'Purity'.----

--------f Captain Darren Long, supplemental: The fleet is extending our time outside of the jumps, so that the higher-ups can discuss our course of action. It's not too late to turn around right now, which several ships have expressed the desire to do. On the 'Washington', we're spending the break on extra recreational activities, so it's not all bad----

--og of Captain Darren L---------------al: Fleet has (overall) elected to continue. Four ships are cowards and turned back. Only 95 ships full of us brave adventurers remain.----

Lo---- Captain Darren Long, after seventh jump: Another ship has disappeared. 94 left. Admiral has not issued a statement. The fleet has come too far out to jump back without the resource tanker to resupply us, so we have little choice from this point but to continue onward. Crew is unhappy with the admiral's silence.----

Lo---------------rren Long, supplemental: Very short break until the next jump. Admiral apparently does not wish to give us time to even discuss possible options. Either we jump with the fleet, or we're stuck here, alone, in deep space. We've chosen to jump, obviously.----

Log of Captain Darren Long, after 13th jump: Two more ships have failed to arrive. We're barely halfway! 92 surviving ships remain. Many of the other captains are nervous. This is not what we signed on for. Four ships have elected to remain at the Midway-Eight deep space station in the hopes of catching a convoy returning to homeworld. Likely more would have also done so, had the station been capable of supporting any more ships. Alas, I was too slow! 88 ships still in the fleet.----

Log of Captain Dar--------------- 19th jump: Another jump, another vanished ship. 87 ships left. It seemed, for a time, that our luck had turned, as no more disappearances for half a dozen jumps. Too bad our luck didn't hold out. Were we even lucky to win the lottery for colonization rights? Seems more like a curse at this point.----

Log of Captain Darren Long, supplemental: Admiral surprisingly has given us a break between jumps, so that we may hold a memorial for the ships that have vanished. We on the 'Washington' are just going to mope around a bit. None of us knew anyone that had disappeared so far. Did anyone? Or are we the only antisocial ship? I wonder.----

---------------Darren Long, after 23rd jump: Three ships gone at once. We're only two jumps away from our destination. 84 ships still here.----

Log of Captain Darren Long, supplemental: Another break this time. Someone asked if we were going to pause for a memorial again, but nobody, not even the one who asked, seemed that keen on it. Are we that blasé about entire ships vanishing with their crew? Or, are we just in a hurry to reach our destination?----

Log of Captain Darren Long, after 24th jump: SIX ships gone. Only 78 of us left! What is happening? Where are they going? Are these really unintentional disappearances? Can it even still be considered an accident, at this frequency? Or is there some conspiracy afoot that I, a lowly captain, don't know about? I wish I had never agreed to this doomed journey. One more jump, and we're home. I've half a mind to turn around and escort the resource tanker back, despite the apparent jump risks! They lied to us.----

Log of Captain Darren Long, after 25th jump: We made it. We've arrived at PDSSp J153259.96−003944.1. 100 ships set out from homeworld, 77 arrived intact. Only one ship vanished this jump. It was the tanker. We are stranded here.
