Okay since my listing messed up I'll redo this and explain the breakdown. In this world most every skill or innate ability levels up with use, some also level with jobs/classes. The level of a skill is the person's proficiency when using it. As an example say a human has Climbing (Trained) competing against an Elf with Climbing (Second Nature), where the names naturally represent the degree of understanding. The human would obviously climb slower and be more prone to falling than the elf.
Ranks are the experience points of the levels, each level has ten ranks before it advances, the more complicated the use the more likely the rank advances. Using the above example, a human training by climbing a ladder quickly might raise his rank by one, where as a human climbing a rock face without assisting gear might raise 3 to 4 ranks.
Hopefully this gives some insight on how the characters tend to advance their skill sets and why everyday easy actions don't give as much as challenging uses.
