Chapter 18 - 18 The Answer

Tears started to flow as Jun Luna took in Bo Tsu's confession and proposal. She had long began to t hink that she would never love again after being cast into the sea. There was no doubts in her mind that she was indebted to Bo Tsu for rescuing her and her then unborn child. He had acted as her rock when she was acclimating to this new place as well. No one previously had shown her such genuine kindness since her parents. He had even helped her to raise her child like a father. He deeply loved the little girl. With everyone looking on with baited breath and Bo Tsu about to pass out due to lack of oxygen, she finally took in a deep long breath. Taking it as a rejection Bo Tsu lowered his head. His heart fell and felt heavy. Just as he was starting to stand, he heard her reply. "YES". Not believing his own ears and the gasp from the crowd, he fell on his bum and looked up with a startled expression. Again to reassure him, Jun Luna repeated, "Yes, Bo Tsu, I will take you as my partner and mate. I thought for the longest time that you would never ask me. I thought that I was the only one feeling the pull." Through weeping Bo Tsu with shaking legs stood up once more. Out of pure instinct he wrapped his arms around Jun Luna and spun her around. "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" the crowd cheered loudly.

After wiping away her tears of joy Jun Luna whispered in her daughters ear to signal a group of young ladies to pass out packages that had been placed in the pagoda to each of the ladies of the village. Every package had their names written upon the bright red paper wrapping. Those who could read helped those who could not. No lady went without one that night. Next even the men and children received as set of Jinbei (pajama looking clothing sets)in white paper wrapping. Everyone rejoiced. The last package had Bo Tsu's name on its yellow paper wrapping. Perplexed he looked it over. 'What could it be? He was certainly not a lady. So what was this?' ,he thought to himself. Inside was a black yakata (robe) and hakama (bottoms) set along with a crisp white kimono style top. The set was embroidered with white orchids on the black pieces and purple orchids on the white tops collar. All of these had been hand made by Jun Luna over the course of time so that she would not feel idle in the shrine once the chores were done. Bo Tsu's set was the last set that she had made. She poured so much care and heart into the making of it. She would have given it to him regardless if he had proposed to her today or not out of gratitude. He had never in his life owned anything so grand. His heart was so full that it felt as if it would burst at any moment. Now he finally had something proper to be married in.

The following day everyone set out to bathe and tidy up for the afternoon wedding. The men went to the east side of the island to the spring to wash, dragging Bo Tsu along so he would not see his bride being prepared. The women and children went to the north to a natural hot spring pool. The ladies added oils, citrus fruits, and flowers into the waters. It's wedding day and they simply must smell and look their absolute best. After washing next the older women helped to get Jun Luna ready. She donned a white kimono and had the elder ladies help her tie up her obi embroidered with the same orchids as Bo Tsu's set. Followed by putting on a pair of tabi socks and zori shoes. Next her make up and hair was done. Then placed on stringed pearls given to her by the local fishermen. The last touches were a white Uchikake (over coat) and head piece. Placed in a covered carriage she was brought back to the center of the village.

In a tiny purple and white flowered kimono Suisei walked the path from the the carriage to the pagoda's stage. She carried a tiny white bouquet in her hands. Reaching the stage she held onto Bo Tsu's hand and whispered to him, "Bo Tsu will you marry me too and become my Ah'pa?" Bo Tsu smiled gently and whispered back, "Of course dear, I can't just take your mommy and not you too. The two of you come as a set." Overjoyed she held his hand tighter, her face turning cherry pink. As soft quin music floated in the air Jun Luna stepped down from the carriage with the help of the village elder. In the eyes of Bo Tsu she looked like she had come from the Heavens. Gulping he steadied his nerves. This was his bride.

The ceremony went off with out a hitch. Golden streams of light descended down between the passing clouds as if Heaven itself was showering blessings over the union. Everyone tossed white flowers in the air as the groom lead his bride to the feast tables and toasted the crowd with a drink similar to Sake. The drink was passed around to all of the adults and juice was passed to the children. The feast was a merry occasion for all. Concluding the festival all of the people lit lanterns and set them adrift in the sea to bless the ancestors and spirits. Exhausted everyone made their ways home as the sun set. Little Suisei was so tuckered that she fell asleep in Bo Tsu's arms and was carried to the shrine to her hammock in her room, not even waking upon being laid down.

Bo Tsu and Jun Luna made their way quietly to her room to start their wedding night.
