Susanto began with a question.
"You remember when they banned tobacco in New Zealand?" he said.
Cruz frowned.
"Yes," he said. "That was around ten years ago, wasn't it? Something like that."
"Correct," said Susanto. "It was exactly ten years ago. They legalized smoking marijuana, even though a single joint contains as many carcinogens as half a pack of cigarettes. They stopped penalizing people for smoking crack, ice, heroin. They'd just wag a finger in your face and send you to a rehabilitation centre. But light up a cigarette, and boom!—they'd come down on you like a ton of bricks."
"Why are you telling me about this?"
