Cruz gave Susanto a full hour to put himself in order. He spent the last twenty minutes circling his room, stopping frequently to listen for sounds from the room next door. But Susanto was remarkably quiet. He coughed a couple of times, that was all.
He called for Cruz to come in the moment Cruz knocked for his door. He sounded impatient. He was standing by the dresser and rocking back and forth on his heels when Cruz entered. Right away, he said:
"Where have you been, Gabriel? I've been waiting for you for the last thirty minutes."
"I thought I'd give you some more time to refresh yourself," Cruz said hurriedly. He noticed that Susanto had radically changed his clothes. He was wearing a sweater and a leather bomber jacket. He'd also exchanged his Italian shoes for a pair of lace-up jungle boots. His two black eyes made him look like a combat-ready raccoon.
"What's up?" Cruz asked. Susanto pouted, and said:
