Chapter 96 - Familiarity (1)

The woman giggled in front of him and said, "Oh my, my daughter is certainly popular with men. She was asked out by another handsome man. He resembles your figure very much."

Her smirk was unreal to Denzel as it gave him shivers down to his spine. He paused for a moment to think of a man that 'resembles his figure'—Ivan. He nearly grumbled before politely thanking the woman. Suddenly, the air was filled yet again with cheers and claps. It lingered then disappeared quickly.

He took his time to find this woman, unsure if he should just give up and let Ivan have his way. People greeted him politely, but he had this sense of urgency oozing out, so their conversations did not last for more than a minute. He quickened his feet, avoiding large crowds as much as possible, but his search had disappointing results.

He smirked and chuckled at himself. He thought, why did I even search for that woman? The event was nearly ending, so he decided to cheer himself with a glass of wine. Even though the surroundings were dark, the glass reflected some sort of light, and in his peripheral, he could see glimmers that he perceived like stars.

He looked up, finding himself unable to move. He held the wine glass tightly as he gazed to the young woman in front of him. Frankly, she did the same. The air that surrounded them tightened, and it loosened as soon as the woman gave him a warm familiar smile.

"E-Excuse me?" he said as he caught the woman's attention, "Have we met before?" His inner self cringed at his words, but thankfully, the woman replied in a familiar voice.

"I don't think so?"

He locked his eyes towards her, and observed. She wore a sexy yet elegant blue gown that suited her figure very much. Her face was beautiful; her lashes was long; her reddish hair was long and wavy, and her eyes and lips somehow shone despite of the dim vicinity.

"I'm Denzel Suarez, nice to meet you," he said to diffuse the awkward atmosphere surrounding them. His face flushed when the woman silently giggled as she introduced herself.

"Yes, of course. I know you, Mr. Suarez. I've heard a lot about you from my mother."

He smiled. "Oh, really? I'm flattered Miss…"

"Mendoza. Sharmaine Mendoza."

Her name had a nice ring, but it had an uncanny resemblance to another name. The air around her had a familiar warmth, and even the way she smiled and blushed had a similar feeling. He stared at her bright face, sipping wine to avoid her noticing his red face.

"It's quite awkward, isn't it, Mr. Suarez?" she walked towards him, "I feel like I've met you somewhere before."

Denzel remained silent, unable to tell if it was the wine that made him hot. Sharmaine smiled. "Would you like to work for me, Mr. Suarez? A partnership with Shawn Corporation, perhaps."

"A… partnership?"

She nodded. "That's right. I've heard that you always refused working with us because of the name of the corporation. That speech you gave… the ending line was all about that person, right?"
