Chapter 2 - Dawn of Ruin

The walk was daunting, marching to city, Minutes of nothing but marching, our surroundings were silent, odd.....This would be a great opportunity for them to ambush us, need to keep vigilance.

The silence broke without warning, a loud explosion from behind. Turning back i can see just a large mushroom shaped dust cloud. Soldiers were flung everywhere with limbs in the air, even the vehicles became overturned. One also in the air. Just after that single explosion, a second earth moving explosion rocked us, this time, one of the mechs was the target, blowing up just beneath it.

"Aircraft detachment is now in orbit, beginning support operation." A voice in the comms announced, above us our spearheader fighters flew in patterns, escorting their bombers. Spiral shaped spearhead bombers whooshed through the sky, with the swift sharp triangular spearheader fighters in front.

"Ambush, mines or controlled charges, alright, new formation." The comms emitted a brief static.

"All units new formation, mechs at the front, armored units stay in front of the infantry. The armor will soak up damage, should've knew this would happen." Our officer frustratingly ordered, annoyed at the ambush attempt. The order was now given, we formed a tight wall with our suits, behind. Infantry ran behind the armored vehicles, more explosions followed with dust clouds appearing more frequently.

"The explosives wont stop, just hope that the armor will be the ones getting the damage. FORWARD!" We started running, smashing the ground with our mech suits with each step.

We ran, ran in a rhythmic pattern, causing the earth to shake like an earthquake was happening.

"MG NESTS AHEAD" In front of me, patches of dirt raised up like trapdoors, a storm of rounds soon followed, some of the patches fired explosives towards us.

"Don't break the wall, shoot at those nests."

Above us, another flying thing was in the air, it didn't look like our aircraft. The small flying objects unexpectedly dove directly at the infantry behind us, dashing above, our machine guns shot down many of the things, which left small explosions once destroyed.

"Possibly a non piloted explosive run. Continue firing." Our shots formed small smalls on the dirt, missing the mg nests. But in sustained firing, i manage to hit some of the nests. Weird tactics they're using.

The bombers flying overhead went back to our positions, as they arrived above the positions of nests the bombs dropped. A cluster of missiles flew down, making a wall of it's own. A wall of fire. In seconds, screams erupted. Not from our men, but from the fire, out emerged flaming charred hostiles, screaming in agony from the fire.

"Put em out." Our officer ordered. One by one we took out the stragglers, removing them from the battlefield permanently.

"We flew above the area, one of our fighters was damaged, but the city seems to be heavily fortified, barricades, numerous on every street but seems to be jury rigged, but multiple heavy weaponry points were located. Large artillery in the deeper parts of the city, all sections locked down with bunkers, but the main defense point they have are walls, walls on every single street.... Good luck." A voice who i assumed is one of the pilots on this planet notified us. "More temporary assault units will be dispatched on all remaining entrance points, careful for friendly fire." He added.

Through the dying flame wall, he was right. The entrance to the city was walled up, from low to high height defenses, from towers, more nests, to bunkers.

"Once all defenders are dead, this planet will be ours for the taking, they'll fight till the end, shame they have to fight us to the very end. They could have served us within the comforts of the empire. But enough talk, bombers are returning for a bombing run on the enemy fortifications, for now just stay away from hostile fire." Our officer explained.

Peering at the sky, i could see many landing pods, each of em can hold about 100 soldiers or more depending on the variant, crashing down as if they were meteors.

Diving down alongside them, bombers, performing a diving run. Careening to the ground at fast speeds.

At last, they dropped their payloads above the defenses, pulling up almost close to the ground.

"Bombing run is complete, let's hit em now. Leave none of em alive, FORWARD!!!" Our officer demanded.

The soldiers behind us cheered, possibly their own leaders said a speech to em.

Now is the time, with ferocity in our hearts, we charged at the damaged fortifications, small holes formed from the bombs, most of the barricades now destroyed, wall weakened. We ran at the front, preparing to ram anything in our way. I moved my mech as fast as it can possibly go, my target, the wall with an mg bunker positioned in front of it, desperately firing at me. It's rounds doing nothing to me.

Up close, one more step, i put my left shoulder and arm in front of me. To take the full hit, my arm slammed hard into the wall, the bunker was already decimated by my mech shins. I rammed through into the main city, the walls broke like tissue paper, no match for me. The other mechs broke through the wall as well. In the distance, we hear multiple faint shouts and explosions, from the east, north, and west of where i stand. Must be the other units breaching. On the street, i can see all ends of the streets walled up as well.

As i looked around, my vision became clouded by black smoke. And bullets ricocheting against my mech. The explosive rounds continued blinding my vision. I stepped around, trying to seek whatever is shooting at me, from the sound alone though. It wasn't just one shooting.

I couldn't see, i can't shoot accurately or hit a target in this state.

"5 Tank line, shoot it." Multiple loud shots rung into my ears, the blinding shots quickly stopped. My vision cleared up to see 5 destroyed tanks, their turrets fallen or their hulls penetrated with large holes. The bullets though continued.

"The buildings are also littered with soldiers, we were given orders to only kill the combatants. Their tech may help us for future help to worlds." The officer approached a gate to the street in front of us, behind the now wrecked tank line. The officer's mech kicked down the wall. Yelps followed, with soldiers falling down from the kicked down wall. The second the wall was destroyed, a large beam of yellow pierced through the officer's mech arm. Hitting a mech behind us in the head. Killing the pilot, the head area sparking up with electricity. Wires dangling out in the destroyed mech interior, no sign of the pilot.

"Go to the buildings, away from the streets." Our officer moved behind a building next to the wall, his right arm now gone.

I moved to the buildings, avoiding the wall.

"People may be inside the building, there's a cannon there, not artillery sized but alot larger. I doubt though it will spot us through the buildings. Move through the buildings, make your way to that mech." After this order, the officer slammed his arm into the building wall, moving through, he was greeted by more ricocheting rounds. More of an annoyance than danger, the Phobos legions started rushing in from the holes we caused.

"Phobos stay away from the street, join the mechs behind, advance into the buildings with them." He added, speaking into the comms of the Phobos as well i assume.

The mechs charged into the buildings, forming holes. They were given the same treatment as the officer, inside, soldiers fired at us. Helplessly.

I pointed my rifle down at the soldiers, and pulled the trigger. Shooting at the soldiers, their screams and shouts instantly silenced as i aimed and shot. They didn't stand a chance against our larger rifles.

"Keep advancing towards the cannon, let the Phobos soldiers deal with stragglers."

The Phobos soldiers poured in from the holes we spawned into the buildings, unleashing hails of rounds, any stragglers alive were quickly cut down from the overwhelming fire.

Closer to the other end of this building, i can see the cannon perched on a platform from some gaps on the walls. It isn't aimed at us, must be distracted by the Phobos.

"Breaching in 5 seconds, prepare yourselves." One of the pilots warned us.

The mech leading in front with one swift but strong kick, broke a hole into the wall.

"MOVE OUT!"

Outside we finished off the stragglers. The cannon slowly aimed at our direction.

"Disable the cannon don't destroy the whole thing." Our officer hastily notified us.

After the order was given, one of the mechs ran directly to the turning cannon. Getting to the platform he fired at the ground and stomped on it killing soldiers.

"There must be a pilot inside." The mech said. A loud screech of metal followed as he threw a large sheet of steel.

"There he is." The mech grabbed what looked to be an ordinary soldier. Like the rest of them.

Without a moment's notice he clasped his hand, squishing the helpless soldier as he tried to escape the metal grasp of the mech. Savage, but this is war. Blood rushed down the metallic hand, as the soldier stopped struggling in just a second.
