Chapter 4 - Escape

I went to bed fully dressed and was lying awake staring at the clock above the door. I already had my smuggled belongings back in my boot and a jacket on. I was thinking about what could go wrong if we messed this chance up, but I couldn't dwell on that now. If I did my nerves would be even more shot than they were already and I couldn't risk the distraction during the escape. The clock finally read 8:40. I climbed out of bed and snuck out of the cabin, careful not to make any noise. I quickly headed for the L section of the camp. There was the odd guard roaming the grounds, but it was easy to avoid them because the camp uniforms were already pretty dark and they didn't have the keen hearing or night vision of a werewolf. Suckers. When I got there, Roy, Caleb, and Grey were waiting outside of the L section cage.

"Where's Jagger" I whispered harshly.

"In the detention block. He got into a brawl with one of the mutts after dinner, broke a few bones and gets hauled off for it. The guy deserved it, it's not like he killed him." Grey says shaking his head.

"You have got to be kidding me," I say miffed by his stupidity for getting locked up before our escape. "We're going to have to leave without him then. We may never get another chance to escape."

We headed into the cage. When we got to the middle of the cage, I made sure they remembered how to just morph their hands. They all did and we started to concentrate on changing only our hands. Sweat pours down the sides of my face from the amount of concentration I'm was using, still a bit weak from the "exercise" earlier that day. It takes me a while but my hand starts to itch and I can feel my wrist expanding for the partial transformation of my hand, making sure I did it just enough to fool the people monitoring the bands. Careful not to lose my concentration I stretch the metal band until it slips off with ease, then I finally relax and let my hand return to normal. I drop the band into the grass along with the others, we leave the cage and head for the loading bay.

There were three people loading the trucks and no guards. Probably because they didn't think the rest of the wolves could get in here, with those HFD's posted all around the outside of the loading bay. Idiots. We maneuvered around the loaders and set the plan into action, Caleb threw a rock at the far end of the bay to distract the majority of the loaders. Two of the men went to check it out, Roy and Grey followed them when they were out of sight from the third loader. Caleb and I took care of the last one. I stepped out into the open to distract him, while Caleb snuck up behind and knocked him out. When the loaders were taken care of, we hid them under some nearby tarps. Roy and I kept watch while Grey and Caleb climbed into the back. Roy was next, I did one last look around, then slipped in last, shutting the door behind me. We hid behind woodpiles and under tarps, then waited for the truck to start moving. Ten minutes after we knocked the loading people out, the truck started to head out of the bay. I was behind a woodpile with Roy beside me. Exhausted I rested my head on his shoulder and the next thing I knew, I was pulled under the lake of sleep, the darkness taking over.

There was a sharp shake of my shoulder after what felt like seconds.

"Kimber, the trucks stopped. Time to wake up," I dimly heard Roy whisper to me.

"Mmm, leave me alone," I mumbled.

Another shake of my shoulder, harder this time.

"Wake up!" Roy said harshly. That woke me up.

"I'm awake!" I say alarmed. "Where are we?" I say rubbing my eyes. The sleepiness was still lingering.

"I don't know, but there's a truck stop outside," Roy explains.

"Okay," I say groggily.

We crawl silently to the door and check if the coast is clear. Once we're sure no one is looking, we hurry out of the truck and into the forest surrounding the truck stop. We went in deep enough that we couldn't see the trucks anymore.

"What now," Grey asks.

"Well, I was thinking we would buy some breakfast at the truck stop or we could go hunting, but there probably isn't anything good. Then I would call Roscoe to see if its safe to go back to Timberwood cabin or to see if he's been captured and just transported to a different facility." I answer while taking out the bank notes from my boot.

"Sounds like a plan," Roy says.

We then headed back into the direction of the truck stop. We went out into the open in pairs, each with about twenty-five dollars. Grey with Caleb, Roy with me. Roy went to get us breakfast while I went to look for an ATM to get some coins for the pay phone. When I inserted the coins, I punched in Roscoe's number from memory. I took about three rings before a voice answered.

"Hello" a gruff voice answered. Definitely not Roscoe.

"Hi, I was wondering if Mr. Norris was home." I asked.

"Yes this is he" The man answered. Roscoes last name was Auden. Caught ya.

"You can stop lying now, I know your not him." I answered calmly. "Now where's Roscoe". There was a thump, and sound of a struggle in the background.

"Oh he's here" The man taunted, just the tiniest bit if exertion showing in his voice. He must be holding Roscoe down while he struggles. At least I hope Roscoe's struggling.

"What'd you do to him" I accused, raising my voice.

"Nothing yet, and if you want to keep it that way you better hurry on over here."

"Let me talk to him, now" I growled. The sound of the phone being passed over filled the earpiece.

"Kimber?" Roscoe's voice filled me with relief.

"Roscoe! Where are you we'll come and get you." I said.

"No. You will not. That is an order." He said in his Alpha voice. The weight of that command pushed down on me like lead. "You'll just be killed for your efforts and I can't have that happen to my Pack. Good-bye Kimber, take care of the others."

Then the line went dead.
