Chapter 69 - Fungal Fever

Gin POV-

Reaching the next city I was left flabbergasted. Staying a little over 4 kilometers away I have Xelu's spiderlings scout the place out. This place has much stronger defenses than the previous city. It seems that many larger species live here too. I can see the mythological minotaurs along with giant red muscle dudes..... How to go about this..... The walls are much larger and they have tons of anti-siege weapons including ballista that would tear through most the spiderlings.... Luckily, plenty of Nemesis' spiderlings remain. They did the most damage on the previous city due to there being no countermeasures for something like spores.

Fire spells will do a small amount of damage but due to it's draconic nature, they are pretty resistant to most elemental damage. I guess it will be the same as last time? Have Kess' spiderlings dig in and drop many fungal spiderlings.....

Feels a bit cheap but, it seems to be a really effective strategy. It's not as if my objective is to kill anyways. It's just to cause choas..... Lets retreat back after this operation. Need to see how things are with Wetho and Ravel's side....

------

Everything is in place. Just need to initiate the attack. I don't think I will use spiderlings other than the fungal ones in this attack. I don't want to lose too many.... Vulki's may be fine to use but, I'm not sure if things like arrows that are imbued with magic will damage them. Anyways, lets start the attack.

Varres POV-

I got reports about strange movements of animals close to Strongblood City. Me and Tot decided it would be best to check it out. It could be the signs of another attack. We don't want a repeat of that scene with undead fungal creatures..... I made sure to send a messenger along to the Head about the current situation. Hopefully I get a reply soon....

The previously attacked city was left in the hands of a friend who is an expert on rebuilding. The Union has been attacked countless times so rebuilding after destruction has become a sort of skill among many of our people. The loss of life can't be ignored though. Children and elderly were included..... You don't go after those types of people. It should just be soldier vs soldier and leader vs leader. Whoever did this attack disregarded this unofficial rule. Of course I'm not suprised as the Drow Theocracy and the Black Iron Pyre do that quite frequently.

-----

Me and Tot arrived at Strongblood City to see everything alright. It seems that whatever force is moving hasn't attacked yet. We meet with the heads of the city and warn them about the potential danger. To which they replied with.

"Huh? Danger? Spiders? We will just destroy anyone or anything that comes our way. That city was full of weaklings so it's no wonder that a whole bunch of them died." City Head 1

"Right? Why would we have to worry? I'd like to see them even try to pull of the same feats here. Dropping guards off walls. I doubt they could even make our guards budge! Don't need to worry about them digging holes either. Only moles and worms do that. Should we be worried about them? No!" City Head 2

Not helpful at all. Might as well have not informed them..... No, the knowledge we obtained from the previous attack may save lives and that is most important. After the meeting, Tot and I visit several places around the city. We warn several different groups that an attack may come. Some take our warnings to heart while others just ignore us.

-----

When night falls, after most of the peoples of this city are asleep, a large fireball is launched into the air. A sign that something is really wrong. Me and Tot were waiting in an inn for something to happen immediately spring into action. Honestly, there was a chance that I was wrong here and the suspicious movement of animals was just a coincidence. It seems that something really was going on though.

As we rush out of the inn an alarm bell is being rung as a massive cloud starts spreading over the city in the dark. If you didnt have any light you would think that it is just fog. However, the color gives it away. It's a sickly green with hues of blue mixed in. Even with my healing factor I wouldn't risk going in. I get together a large number of remaining guards along with anyone who is willing to fight. After a few minutes, it starts happening. Walking corpses start marching out of the cloud. They hold onto weapons and charge into the lines that I had set up.

The worst thing that I had learned about these undead from the previous city is that they are intelligent and know how to use weaponry. They are quick learners as well and can counter strategies that are employed against them. So, it is best to take them out as quick as possible.

"Varres, go help with healing. I'm going to search for whoever is behind this" Tot

"Right. Just be careful. Your stealth is not without fault. People like the Driw Queen's Guard Captain are able to find you." Varres

"I know.... I'll never be captured by scum again...." Tot

She vanishes into the air as I have a new worry bud in my heart. These attacks are probably being orchestrated by that one guy that the Union Head was talking about. What are his weaknesses?..... Can he only control spiders and these undead? How far is his range of operations? Will he able to spot Tot? Perhaps he is aware of us..... Impossible to say. I just wish that this was an even playing field that we could duke it out on....

I can only keep these guards together in this fight against the dead for now..... I really do hope that the Union Head can come reinforce us. If not, even Ogen or some elite troops will be able to diffuse the danger here.....
