Angela was a teen when she realized that she didn't want to spend her life on the farm. If she did, she would end up either as a single lady on the Grant farm or marry one of the boys from neighboring farms and move there. She didn't like any of those options.
Angela wanted a life that does not include her waking up at 4 AM so that she can milk the cows. She wanted an office job where she can dress up and not smell of animals. It's not that she was a scholarly person, but she was good at studying and she saw college as her ticket away from the farm. As much as she was into romance and stories about prince charming, she knew how that is something that comes with luck, so when she decided to leave the farm, her plans didn't include any of those aspects that don't depend on her.
