Huo Nanchen valued others more than his wife.
"Where's Nanchen?"
Mrs. Huo's question made Gu Ruochu uncomfortable. Tears welled up in her eyes.
After Gu Ruochu returned, Mrs. Huo had not bothered to ask about Huo Nanchen's whereabouts. However, she knew that something was wrong.
'That little brat doesn't even know that his wife has caught a cold!'
"Mother, Nanchen had some matters to attend to. I only have a cold, and I'm feeling a little better. It's fine," Gu Ruochu said lightly. Mrs. Huo's heart ached even more. "I'll get Nanny Zhang to make you some light food and soup. I'll be back in a while."
"All right."
Gu Ruochu was angry at Huo Nanchen, and she did not want to tell him that she had a cold. Wasn't he by Ning Tangxi's side accompanying her delicate child?
Would Huo Nanchen come back if she told him that she was sick?
Gu Ruochu didn't think so.
Her sadness made her fever worse. She lay silently on the bed, and the room was eerily quiet.
Gu Ruochu's fever worsened as the night wore on. She drifted in and out of her sleep, and her nightmares returned. When she woke up in the morning, she saw Mrs. Huo and the doctor whispering over the bed.
"Ruochu, you're awake?"
"Yes." Her voice was abnormally dry, but her body felt much better. Her fever had already subsided.
"That's good. I'll get someone to make breakfast, and you can then come down to eat."
Gu Ruochu nodded and got off the bed. Other than a stuffy nose, she felt like her normal self. Nanny Zhang had woken her up several times to help her change her IV drip.
After tidying herself up, she went downstairs and did not remember to carry her phone with her.
Huo Nanchen had not yet returned to the Huo residence. Ruo Chu felt a chill in her heart. He had said that he had gone to accompany Cheng Xi, but why hadn't he returned after promising that he would. Had that woman captivated him?
Gu Ruochu pushed the thoughts to the back of her mind as she sat at the dining table.
Huo Zirui and Huo Zijun sat next to each other. Huo Zhenggang glanced around the table. He did not seem to notice Huo Nanchen's absence, and if he did, he acted as if he did not care.
"Did my sister-in-law get sick last night?"
Nothing good ever came out of Huo Zirui's mouth, especially when he put on his gloating expression. However, Gu Ruochu calmly drank her porridge. "Yes, I caught a cold."
"Huo Zirui, eat your breakfast. You don't need to worry about your sister-in-law."
Mrs. Huo glared at her son as she scolded him sternly.
"My brother isn't around, and my sister-in-law is sick. Is it wrong to care about her health?" Huo Zirui looked at Gu Ruochu innocently. He then asked sarcastically, "Wasn't it Cheng Xi's birthday yesterday? My brother accompanied them, right? Aren't you angry?"
"You should care about Miss Ning." Gu Ruochu's cold voice rang out. "After all, she relies on her child to gain attention. She can't even be considered to be a mistress. How jealous is she that she would act in such a manner? She's just a clown that makes everyone laugh for no reason.
"I only consider someone to be my enemy if they reach my level. Otherwise, they're nothing but clowns to me. So, Huo Zirui, are you sure you can avoid me?"
Huo Zirui's face turned red. It seemed that Gu Ruochu looked down on Ning Tangxi and did not see her as a threat. She did not mind his bragging, which was intended to make her feel bad.
Gu Ruochu was right. Ning Tangxi had always been jealous of her.
Mrs. Huo held back her laughter after she saw that Gu Ruochu had managed to shut Huo Zirui up. Nonetheless, she felt disappointed by her son's behavior.
