Bastion and Ash stared at the sky being filled with the last remaining ships being launched into space. Each vessel holding thousands of lives aboard. Lives of those who had the money to buy a place for themselves.
Their hopes diminished with
the fleeting time, but oddly enough, there was a tranquility to it all. "Hey,
remember the first time we met?" Ash tried to lighten the mood.
"How could I not?
Your dumbass got caught smoking behind the bleachers." Bastion let out a
reminiscent laughter. Ash joined in after. "And your dumbass got caught
trying to climb over the fence."
Bastion lightly punched Ash's
shoulders. "I would've gotten away with it if you weren't smoking."
"Same. But you just had
to get spotted while making your "great escape"." The laughter
continued, and so did the memories.
Bastion and Ash looked
towards the early rise of the moons and the streak that soared towards one of them.
The boys' nerves slowly resurfacing. "Do you think we could've finished
High School?" Ash tried making small talk.
But before Bastion could even
answer, A loud and thunderous crash echoed through the sky. That streak
collided with a moon. Behind it, a wave of blue and white energy waves rushed
forth. the white waves quickly turned to a gray and then a black.
Some ships exploded from
crashing moon fragments and the energy waves. While other ships plunged back
down to the surface. Finally, Broken satellites followed suit. Once everything
came to the surface, chaos began to spread.
The energy waves first
hit the boys; and, the debris crashed around them. The wave that hit them blew
them a few yards away from where they were sitting. Then the sounds of people screaming,
and the sounds of impact followed.
When bastion opened his eyes,
he winced at how bright his surroundings had gotten. Almost as if a light was
being shinned towards him. It took his eyes some time to adjust, but even then,
the world still looked brightly lit. Objects around him had a faint-light-blue
outline to them.
Ash was unconscious, blood
running down his forehead, and his lower body was stuck under a piece of metal
debris. "Ash! Wake up! Common man don't do to this to me." Bastion
slapped his face a couple of times. "Ash!"
Ash shot open his eyes to the
sight of the brown-eyed-short-black-haired teen Cradling him, almost to the
point of tears. "What's going on cry baby?" He let out a faint
laughter. Then panic slowly set in. "Yo. where are my legs? I can't feel
my legs!?" Panic set into them.
Bastion looked around and
found a metal stick not too far off. He lodged it in between the piece of metal
and his friend and pushed down in it to lift the scrap metal off his friend.
"Ash I need you to crawl out of there man. This thing is to heavy for me
to get off you."
Once he was out, Bastion put
one of Ash's arms over his shoulder and dragged him to the closest building.
Behind them was a trail of Ash's blood leading into one of the homes.
"Stay here bud. Let me
see if there is any first aid around." Seating Ash on a couch, he searched
the house for any kind of first aid. But when he went got back, Ash was motionless.
"No no no NO! This isn't funny man wake up!" But Ash never responded.
Bastion checked for breathing
and a pulse, but he got nothing. he sat next to his friend for a good while
crying in silence as the chaotic screams continued outside.
When he was ready, he went to
the backyard and began digging a grave for his friend. Bastion said his final goodbyes
and took Ash's thin golden necklace as a memento. Bastion stared at the house
one last time before going out into this fucked up world he called home.
