Chapter 5 - Moving On (1)

That night my mom and dad came home from work. They have heard that Jeremy came by to visit me but they didn't know what happened that left me in tears.

"Oh my baby, your eyes are swollen. What happened?" Mom asked with a worried tone.

"Did you and Jeremy get into a fight again?" My dad asked and patted my head. "Don't worry. I am sure Jeremy will coax you in no time. He always does."

The fight my dad mentioned was more of me being a spoiled brat towards Jeremy. If ever Jeremy doesn't do or buy the things I want, I get into a tantrum and Jeremy will always coax me after.

"It's not that Dad. Well, mom, dad I have something to tell you." I said forcing a smile.

I have cried all afternoon and my tears have almost dried up, resulting to my swollen eyes. I sat up straight and looked at my parents seriously. They saw me being serious so they waited for me to speak up.

"Mom, dad, I want to break the engagement with Jeremy." I said at last. After saying such things, I felt a huge weight being lifted up from deep inside of me.

Both my parents had wide eyes in shock.

"Dear, are you sure about this?" Mom was the first one to talk. "I mean, I know how you like Jeremy a lot."

"Yes, I do like him. But mom, he doesn't see me the same way." I explained. "After all the years we have been together, he has only seen me as a little sister."

"Even so, your relationship with him is good." Dad said. "Not all arranged marriage forms into love. But if you have mutual trust, respect and understanding with one another, then the relationship will work and it will last more than relationships built with love."

I lowered my head, not wanting to look at my dad. I have promised to take the blame on this one. I don't want Jeremy to look bad just because he has fallen in love with someone else.

But I guess dad sensed something. "Unless Jeremy had done something he shouldn't have. Tell me Ana, what did he come here for?" I cringed with my dad's domineering tone. "Don't tell me he came here to break your engagement because of some girl he just met?!"

My dad's voice was angry. He really had a good intuition on things and that is what makes our business flourish.

"Preposterous!" My dad shouted and stood up. "He had the nerve to date another woman while being engage with my daughter! This is pure adultery. I will call the Copper couple and tell them of their son's womanizing act!"

"No dad! Please wait." I grabbed his hand before he was able to take a step away. "It really is my fault. It was my entire fault. I was the one who insisted on this engagement. Jeremy has never given his own opinion in this and just agreed to the engagement you and his parents decided. It was my own whimsical mistake."

"And you have the nerve to defend him. Ana you should hate him for what he has done." Dad was fuming with anger.

"Honey, let's listen to what Ana has to say. Okay?" Mom said calmly. This was one of my mom's special skills, how to calm my raging father's temper.

My dad sighed deeply and took his sit once more. I breathed in to explain myself further.

"Mom, dad, it is not Jeremy's fault that he has fallen in love with another woman. Because in the first place what we have was only sibling love." I explained. "It was only my wishful thinking that it can be more. It was only one sided love in my part."
