Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

A little girl stood at the window. Her black hair tied to form two little ponytails. Her brown eyes stared at the water trails that raced on the windowpane due to heavy rain pouring outside the house she lived in. The dark sky thundered with the clouds that clashed against each other. A bolt of lightning that first arrived before a thunderous growl, made the girl jump away from the window like a startled rabbit. The windows of the house shook in resonance when she heard a voice call for her,

"Evelyn, what are you doing up here?" It was a boy who looked no older than eleven with his brown hair that was swept from the side. Seeing the boy here, the girl named Evelyn blushed. An innocent blush which was mixed with shyness in it due to her young age and quiet nature. Since the time she was born, Evelyn had looked up at the young boy who was the neighbor's eldest son.

"Liam, it rains," she pointed out her hand towards the window as if he hadn't noticed it.

Liam craned his neck slightly, taking a look outside to say, "The weather telecast did say it was going to rain heavily today. Haven't you become brave though, standing here all alone in the attic while looking at the rain," hearing the praise of her being brave, the little girl stood straighter as if she had achieved the title in WMA championship.

Another thunderstruck from the sky making the little girl jump again, her shoulder raising as she looked outside the window. Hearing a pair of footsteps approach the attic, a young boy who was none other than Liam's brother, Sebastian, who stepped inside the attic of their house.

The younger boy wore a pair of glasses that rested on his nose. His eyes looking terribly bored until he found the little girl who now stood behind Liam who was three years older than him, "You finally found her," he murmured under his breath while staring at Evelyn without a friendly expression that made the girl cower further behind the older boy.

"Did you come searching for her too?" asked Liam, tilting his head with a faint smile.

"Why would I? I have other things to do than look for her. It's not like she will get lost in this house," said Sebastian, his eyes darting towards the window and then his brother which subtly moved to look at the girl.

"Ah, yes. You did say you have assignments to complete," hearing his older brother respond back, "Look Evie is now able to face thunders," and as if to jinx it another thunderstruck making the girl jump again.

"Yes, I can see that," answered Sebastian with a dull voice, "Her mother was asking for her. Time to go home," hearing this Evelyn's shoulders drooped, her face wilting like a flower in the hot sun.

"So soon?" asked Evelyn, looking up at Liam as she craned her head up to look at him. Liam gave out a warm smile, placing his hand on her head while shaking it playfully.

"You can always come back tomorrow. Your mother must be missing you, after all, you have spent the entire day today here with us. It is quite understandable that she would want to spend some time with you. Come let's head down," Sebastian who stood there looking at his brother and the next-door neighbor girl who nodded her with a smile, looked at her coldly. This little girl thought the boy in his mind, "Did mother bake the cookies?"

"Unfortunately, it got burnt," upon Sebastian's reply, Liam frowned.

"Unfortunate, it is. We can have cookies tomorrow. Mother might redo it for the love of baking and also for the love of turning her children fat."
