As Var's cries rang out, the still dazed Rastel walked up to him with Roxanne following close behind.
He still couldn't shake off the violent image of Vars giving the wolf a gruesome beat down. The corpse of the wolf was still laying on the floor, broken in numerous places looking like a discarded piece of rag with its skull burst open.
And now that the battle, no, the massacre was over. Numerous thoughts were filtering through his brain but only one caused him the greatest alarm.
'That wolf could wield magic! He actually killed a magic beast with his bare hands!'
Vars was still sobbing loudly over Baluu's body and as Rastel got closer, he could see the boy's hands were actually mangled and his flesh was visible.
Roxanne bent low and reached for Baluu.
"Grhh!"
She flinched as Vars suddenly growled at her but still reached forward with a chiding tone.
"Shut up and let me take a look at him, we might still be able to save him."
Vars instantly shut up and looked at her with hopeful eyes but still held Baluu's head firmly in his laps.
Roxanne leaned forward and felt around the bearman's chest. After a few seconds of careful observing, her eyes lit up.
"He's still alive!"
Hearing this, Vars's breathing got louder as more tears started flowing down his eyes.
Roxanne took out a potion from her inventory, the potion was stored in a small bottle and had a dark shade of pink compared to the usual light red.
Rastel felt the potion looked familiar and was comparing it to the potion Mary had handed to him when they met outside Laron after he had been stabbed in the stomach by the syndicate's bandits.
Although he hadn't taken a good look at it then, he was sure that it was the same.
There was a bit of reluctance on Roxanne's face when she held the potion but she still took the bottle to Baluu and poured a little through his lips.
They waited for a few seconds to see but there wasn't any reaction even after she fed him a second sip.
Vars started despairing as he pleaded with Roxanne with a hoarse voice.
"Please, give it to him again! I will pay you no matter how much it costs, one way or the other!" he was almost yelling.
Roxanne looked at Baluu sadly, even if he was an NPC, he had grown on her with just the few hours they had been together.
But the potion she had just fed him was a high tier intermediate health potion. This potion costs tens of thousands of kryts per bottle and was very potent.
Normally, just a sip would be sufficient to heal serious injuries but the fact that Baluu didn't react even though he was still alive meant the bearman was really in a life threatening situation.
Unless they had a high level light priest nearby, the bearman would definitely die without a doubt!
"Please!" Vars added when he saw she didn't react.
"He is my only friend, please! I will do anything!"
Roxanne was suddenly feeling very bad and uncomfortable. She couldn't waste more of the potion because she knew it wouldn't work either way but she didn't have the heart to tell the mourning Vars just that.
Just as she was still despairing on what to say, Rastel's cold voice came in.
"It won't work"
"...…"
Roxanne turned her gaze to him.
"What?" Vars paused for a moment before he spoke with trembling lips.
"The potion, it won't work. The fact that it didn't work the first time was already a problem. It won't work no matter how many times she gives it to him. She is nice enough for even giving him twice."
Rastel calmly stated it out.
Rastel wasn't a heartless person, but he had an innate dispassion for overdramatic emotional scenarios.
He could easily tell by Roxanne's hesitance that the situation was bad. Guessing that the potion was useless in this scenario came easily after.
When he had taken the potion after he had been stabbed back then, the wound healed almost instantly and he was able to move soon after.
Instead of dragging out the scenario right now and endangering the bearman's life, they could instead try to find a solution as quickly as possible.
Vars looked shocked as he felt his last piece of hope shatter. He felt as if he was submerged into cold icy water and the breath from his lungs was taken from him violently.
Although the two summoned beside him didn't know, Vars was more or less an outcast in Eadon despite his lofty status as a dwarven grandmaster's disciple.
In fact, it was only his status that kept him in the town.
Vars had lived with his master since he was an infant and all while he grew, he had been ostracized and was kept in contempt by the townsmen except in the presence of his master.
They had maltreated and hurled insults at him that left the young Vars confused, bitter and bubbling with pent up rage.
Due to that, he had developed an anti-social behavior and also held deep contempt towards them. The only person that had reached out to him was the bearman, Baluu.
Although Baluu was a few years older than him, he had taken on the role similar to an elder brother in Vars's life and had shown him there was more to life than hating other people.
They had gone on countless adventures together where Baluu taught him how to hunt and live freely. Those were some of the best memories of his young life.
But now this person, who had given him companionship in a place where he was surrounded by people who despised him and had led him to experience wonderful memories was dying in his hands and he had no way to save him?
Unacceptable!
He couldn't accept such a situation!
Why was it?
Why did this happen!?
Was he not strong enough?
No! The wolf that did this was dead by his own hands!
Was the wolf just too cunning?
Why did he not notice it earlier?
He was a trained hunter, he should have known!
So many thoughts went through his head as he felt he was approaching a mental breakdown.
Rastel looked at the his face that was filled with pain and confusion and sighed deeply. He immediately took out a golem from his inventory as he prepared to activate it.
Time was running out and there wasn't much they could do here but there was still one last option left, Myra.
Although he still wasn't sure of the blue eyed girl's background or her powers. He knew she was a very powerful cleric, probably of the light priest class.
The fact that she had healed him from the all out attack of a level 28 assassin back in Laron was still fresh in his mind.
That and the fact that she wiped out an entire army of a high class necromancer's undead with a single spell.
Both feats were deeply amazing on their own and he remembered Natsu's shock when he had told him about them.
If anyone could salvage the situation at this point, it would have to be Myra.
"Time is running out, let's go." Rastel's voice broke Vars out of his thoughts and he looked up.
"Go? Go where?" Roxanne who was standing silently all this while asked.
"Back to the cart" he was slightly reluctant to let the fact that Myra was a powerful cleric to leak out.
If it did, people would realize that she was probably a high class NPC and the target on their backs would only get bigger.
"There might be a chance that we would be...…" Rastel trailed off mid-sentence as something suddenly popped up in his mind.
"A chance that what? A chance that what!?" Vars was anxious.
Rastel who had trailed off suddenly remembered something very important!
Just a few days back, when he had trailed the assassin Doe back to the place they fought the necromancer.
He had given her a wooden flower he had carved as a gift in return for the bottle of pills she had given him.
"They are healing pills, they are strong enough to quickly heal you even when you are near death."
As he remembered Doe's hoarse voice when she handed him the bottle of pills, his eyes suddenly lit up!
'The pills!'
He instantly reached out to access his inventory.
Rastel's sudden movement caught the attention of both Vars and Roxanne as they looked at him hopefully.
Did he really have something that could help?
Roxanne was even more skeptical as she knew Rastel was a newbie.
The fame of Sleeping beauty was barely a week old and according to the information around, he had just left the beginner village and hadn't even been to a city yet.
How could he have access to a high class healing potion in a village talk less of the funds to purchase such a thing?
Her intermediate potion had cost her nearly 20,000 kryts, that was a lot of money!
Rastel brought out the bottle of pills Doe had given him and uncapped the bottle.
A very strong medicinal aroma immediately went into the air and even the now drizzling rain couldn't disperse it.
The seven dark green pills inside the bottle seemed to let out a dull luster as he rolled one out and bent low.
"This pill should be able to heal him" he handed it over to Vars.
'A pill…..' Roxanne's eyes widened a bit but she held in her words.
Pills were generally more potent than potions but,
'Where did he get a pill? Did he meet a master alchemist somewhere?'
Vars hurriedly took the pill and tried to push it into Baluu's mouth.
"Wait, break it up and pour it in here." Roxanne advised as she brought out another bottle.
This was a low basic healing potion, the type Oron had given to Rastel to complete his class quest.
Using his fingers, Vars crushed the pill to powder and poured it into the potion Roxanne handed to him. The potion bubbled a bit and then transformed from a light red color to a dark shade of grassy green.
He carefully poured the potion down Baluu's throat to avoid spilling it and then watched anxiously for the pill's effects.
It didn't take long, Vars suddenly felt the body underneath him slowly turn feverishly hot even under the cold rain.
Rastel watched with astonished eyes as he saw the large gaping wound at the bearman's neck closing slowly but surely.
Within a few minutes, the wound had fully scabbed over and healed with only the lack of fur present.
"That's truly amazing!" Roxanne whispered.
Rastel couldn't help but to silently agree. If they had something this amazing in the real world, people would probably start thinking about immortality not long after.
The bearman looked somewhat pale after that but his heartbeat was stronger and he was definitely alive!
Vars let out fresh tears of joy.
He couldn't remember crying so much in his entire life, he couldn't even remember ever crying at all!
But his mind had just being through several ups and downs and now that everything was over, a deep sense of fatigue washed over him.
He let out a deep sigh before leaning over Baluu's large heaving body and silently fell asleep.
