Half an hour later, we reached the Cuernavaca airport as the sun was rising. I hadn't realised it before, but I must have been unconscious for several hours dozing on and off, after my clash with Pierre and his guards. Damn, I was really fatigued.
Now, I was struggling with a moral dilemma. The pilot could tell the others what had happened if I spared his life, and that would make more people come after me. But I couldn't murder him in cold blood, since I had promised Alex to not kill anymore. I decided to let him choose his own fate. I touched his left shoulder and felt my empathic power surging over me.
"Benjamin William Cook. You'll have to make a difficult decision about life and death." I said firmly.
"Wait… How do you know my name??" Benjamin stuttered in shock.
"Don't you worry about that. Just answer my question." I replied.
"Okay…So what do you want me to decide?" Benjamin asked.
"Whether you prefer to get permanent amnesia or to die," I replied coldly.
"Can't you just let me go? I promise to not tell anyone what happened," Benjamin pleaded.
"I can't hold you to a promise conjured at gunpoint..." I replied.
Benjamin nodded and replied, "Then, I choose death."
"Death?" I said in surprise, not expecting him to reject the other option.
"I love my family very much, I cannot live with myself if I forget about them," Benjamin said with a broken but firm voice.
"Very well, then I will kill you", I replied and aimed my pistol at Benjamin's head.
As I was about to shoot, Alex pushed my hand and stopped me. "Sabina, this is not who you are, I know you are a good-hearted person, you promised to not kill again!" Alex exclaimed with an upset voice.
"But, if I don't kill him, he will alert the others," I responded coldly.
"No, he will not. I vouch for him." Alex said and continued. "Benjamin, would you like to start a new life, a life where you can do good for the world?" Alex looked at him with innocent eyes.
"Yes… Yes, I do.", Benjamin said weakly.
"Excellent. As the CEO of Building a Better World Pty Ltd, I will hire you as my personal pilot. Your first job is to fly our private jet to Hawaii."
"Thank you, sir. I accept this offer." Benjamin replied.
We got on the plane and took off before the Mexican government found out about the death of Pierre Beaumont. As the aircraft reached the Pacific Ocean, I felt a deep sense of relief, but could also sense a terrifying premonition. Alex's act of mercy towards the pilot would cause us more pain and suffering in the future. I turned to Alex and whispered into his ear, "You shouldn't have done that, he will turn against us."
"No, he won't, and besides I couldn't let you murder him in cold blood," Alex responded defiantly.
"He chose his own destiny," I responded coldly.
"No, he chose the least bad option for him. Choosing death over forgetting the ones he loved, proved to me that he is a good man." Alex replied.
"I am not convinced," I replied solemnly.
"Neither am I," Alex responded, paused, and continued, "But I would rather die again, than losing my morality."
