"Where were you yesterday, Jeane?" Jacques wondered.
"I-I-I was, um, at the doctors' office. Y-Yeah, the other day. Um…"
"What do you mean by ze doctors' office?"
"The day before…"
"OH! Wi, Jeane, I see now."
"Merci, Jacques." Going to make the wedding cake that was needed, I went on ahead and found all the ingredients for the icing. The cake had to be perfect for this couple, per usual. I just wanted to have the icing done before Dev came in.
"What's up?" Dev greeted, and smacked me on the back.
"Gee thanks." I said with my apron covered in icing.
"Oh. I am so sorry. The issue with you doing icing means it will be too bitter anyways."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"I'm just saying that your baking has gotten worse the past week. You might have to go strictly to the decorating and let me do all the hard work on cakes from now on."
I move to make another batch and follow the recipe with a little bit of my own touch. "Dev, you are just jealous that I can make the parfait icing. The icing you make is too… what's that word?"
"Good? Wonderful? Savory?"
"Rich."
"Oh sure. Just because my family is some 200,000 gold coins richer, you have to rub it in."
"OH-HO! You think I'm messing around with status? Then what about Emma? You've told your parents about what she wants to be right?" Silence came from Dev's mouth. "That is what I thought. Now, you need to go make those cookies don't you?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. You will have the chance a little while later."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"OH, nothing." and he went to work making me wonder about his decision making.
"Hey," Emma said after work that day, "was wondering if you could whip something up for your favorite customer?" she had that sparkle in her eyes whenever she looked at Dev. Usually, Dev gave her the same look, but his eyes were slightly dull. Something had to of happened yesterday that I did not know about. It made me worried since I was in the middle of their friendship. These two people were the ones who made me the happiest and did not want to be around when anything wrong happened. Each time, they would make me choose a side and I did not want that to happen.
"Hey, I heard about this new restaurant called the Dragon's Fire. Wanna try it out?" I suggested.
I hoped that it might help with the hunger Emma was feeling. She had that stance of wanting to start an argument before she ate anything. Once she got started, she will not stop. Dev knew that since they have been dating for two years.
"Fine. as long as Mr. Snarky gets some spicy wings." Emma retorted.
"Now wait a minute!" Dev shouted.
Emma and I snaughled. Heading there, the man in the hood was near the edge of the woods, dripping blood. Goosebumps crawled on my back and the thought of him looking at me was scary. I did not understand what the deal was, but the feeling was something I could not shake. The problem was, he felt familiar and was never around when my dad was helping those in the woods.
