Chapter 30 - Notice of Disengagement

Rosa sends a message to Graysen to come back early in the evening. But Graysen arrives home late into the night and Rosa is already fast asleep. Graysen wakes up early according to his body clock. He stays in the bed and delays going out in the morning.

When Rosa opens her eyes, she sees him with his back on the headboard. She takes the brown envelope at the side table and hands it to him. He reads the label at the top of it: 'Notice of Disengagement'. He gives Rosa a bewildering look.

He opens the envelope. Looks at the thin pages of papers and asks, "What do you mean by this?"

Rosa calmly retrieves the envelope from him and takes the small photograph inside. She shows it to Andrei. "That's our baby."

Graysen remains unresponsive staring at the photo he has been holding.

Rosas's eyes begin to dampen from the frustration. It seems to her that is not in his best interest to have a baby with her. He does not care about her or the baby. She wants to hit Graysen to put some sense into his head.

Graysen reaches out to her hand. He asks to confirm, "You're pregnant? We're going to have a child?"

Rosa nods quickly tilting her head away from him as her tears begin to fall.

Graysen embraces her. "I'm sorry dolce mia I did not wish for you to hate me. Give me another chance please. I swear from now on no more secrets. I was so afraid that you'll back out from marrying me if you knew about Athena beforehand. I was wrong, so wrong."

He looks at Rosa's face and wipes her tears. "Don't leave me please. Let me take good care of you and our baby."

Rosa replies, "Ok, ok. Don't forget taking care of Athena, too. Who says I'm leaving you?"

"What's that notice all about?" Graysen queries.

"It means that I am disengaging you from your mistakes. You are now absolved. Try doing it the next time I don't know if I can still forgive you. I realized since I'm carrying a new life, let's start anew."

Graysen tightens his embrace and caresses her hair.

"You promise no more secrets? You'll discuss everything to me?" Rosa adds.

He keeps nodding. "Yes. I don't like you getting angry anymore. It's bad for our baby," he assures her.

"I apologize for my late reaction a while ago. I've been drowning with worries of too many state problems and squabbles from the political party, and you and your astonishing notice." He then kisses her forehead.

She reproves him, "Didn't you read what's inside?

Graysen hits his forehead. "Oh, the papers? Sorry I cannot comprehend what's on it. I am a lawyer not a doctor. How old is our baby now?"

"Eight weeks," she confirms to him.

Graysen grins. He remembers their island trip.

"Are you good at firing guns?" she suddenly asks.

"I don't know. Maybe. Sometimes," he replies.

"I can surmise you're a sharp shooter." Rosa snuggles to him finding a more comfortable position.
