When Mian reached room 301, she saw the little boy staring at the ceiling expressionlessly. Beside him standing his worried parents, Qian Juexi and Su Meilin.
If not for the state-of-the-art technology equipment, with the-world-over acclaimed patients-care system, this room would have passed as some fancy suite of a world-class luxurious hotel room, having high-end hotel finishes.
Far away from the typical picture of a general hospital with drab, soul-destroying, dirty-white walls, lingering smell of disinfection and compound of Chinese medicine along with the browned off or fed up expressions on the irascible medical professionals' faces, here certified nurses with PhD, fully trained in hospitality, wait on the patients.
Even the electric adjustable bed was sporting a four-figured white bedsheet, Sunbeam heated blankets, with the Saatva classic mattress.
Just beside the bed, the large picture window offered the garden's refreshing view, for uplifting patients' gloomy mood. In the right corner, the small kitchenette built with glass paneled walls, was equipped with utensils, coffee set, toaster, microwave, and refrigerator. Beside that was the mini-bar full of drinks.
The spacious bathroom had a full-sized bathtub, a superfluity of toiletries, hair dryer, a set of towels and bathrobes.
Just opposite the bed, there was a 72'' high-quality flat-screen television, which came with free wi-fi.
On the left, it was the square-sized balcony with rectangular sofa sets, which also served as an eating area. Another notable part was the flavourful, scrumptious catering provided by the five-star restaurant with private servitors to serve the family members.
To raise the emotional heights of the patients, and buoy them mentally, the interior was ornamented with LED lighting, ceiling pendants, and had the walls embellish with the original paintings from the world renowned artists.
As the saying goes, luxury doesn't come cheap, this pamperedness forked out $7000 out of Qian Juexi's pocket per a single night.
Su Meilin was about to say something right after seeing Mian, but she was stopped when Mian gestured her to quiet down, by putting her index finger on her lips.
Mian went beside the king size flexabed, she sat on it studying the small human, whose back and head had been resting on the customized pillow lifter, with a small foam wedge beneath his knees; then greeted the boy with a broad smile on her face, "Good Evening Champ! How are you doing?" Her superficial outburst of keenness was completely contrasted to the inner turmoil.
The moment Mian's soothing voice floated to the child's ears with the word champ, he blinked his eyes once, then slowly switched his gaze from the ceiling to her.
He appeared to be mesmerized for a while staring at Mian's face, a delicate tint of pinkness crawling up his neck, while twinkle adoring his eyes. Nonetheless, he didn't delay in showing his little thumb to Mian.
Qian Juexi and Su Meilin, who were kept on their toes, heaved a sigh of relief finally. Nonetheless, in the next moment, Su Meilin cried out, "Why isn't my baby talking, doctor? Can't he talk now?" She started crying loudly, disturbing the earlier tranquil atmosphere.
"He is all right Mrs. Qian. Please keep your voice down. This is a hospital." Speaking reflexively, Mian turned her head towards Su Meilin and directed her stern gaze at her, which intimidated the color out of the latter's face.
Well, Mian couldn't help it. Su Meilin's loud raucous voice had the full potential to knock her own son out, who was now in fragile health.
Immediately afterwards, Su Meilin zipped her mouth; frightened by the stern aura swirling around Mian. At the same time, she relaxed a bit hearing her son was all right, and didn't dare to make any more sound.
Qian Juexi, on the other hand, stood there quietly. He already learnt his lesson, 'If this doctor says it's all right then it's all right.'
Mian looked back at Yangyang again; feigning ignorance, she asked, "You just showed me your cute little thumb up! What does it mean honey?" She was totally non-identical with the person she acted like a second ago. "I'm actually not good at gesticulation. I don't understand gestures at all. Do you know what it means, nurses?" Mian asked, her voice carrying a confused note.
Everyone present there understood Mian's trick, and they cooperated with her as well. "We also don't know, Dr. Mian." All four nurses replied in unison.
Soon after that, the room lapsed into silence. Ruling out his parents, Yangyang's gaze went to everyone, but facial expressions of those surrounding him were puzzled. Qian Juexi continued watching the show with piqued curiosity.
Abandoned by all, Yangyang's eyes had to go back to his parents, as his last ray of hope. Sneakily, he was perfectly aware of the blunder he made. Hence, he was staring at the ceiling after waking up in order to avoid getting reprimanded.
However, for him, now answering Mian was most important! He knew that his parents knew the meaning of thumb up, so he was expecting them to say it to Mian on his behalf.
Qian Juexi narrowed his eyes under the symmetrical eyebrows, a look that suggested that he couldn't be forced to take on the role of conveying unwilling words, "You sneaked out of the house, and went to the streets without informing anyone, so we are angry at you. We are not going to answer it in your place, also, stop looking at your mommy, this time she won't help you out as well."
Su Meilin would have ended up giving in to her son's whim by now. Nevertheless, looking at Mian she could tell, the doctor was observing her son; thus, she hardened her heart and kept avoiding looking at her munchkin.
'If YangYang doesn't talk, will this pretty doctor be angry at Yangyang?' The little fella thought, with the eyes wide and features a bit tensed.
Mian blinked her eyes as she could see the confusion on the little boy's face.
As no one helped him in communicating with Mian, Yangyang didn't have any other option but to move his lips, "Thumbs up can mean two things. One is all the best and the other one is I'm good." Yangyang said with a childish husky voice. His voice broke, as he hadn't spoken in three days.
