Chapter 1 - The sapphire basket

Albion is a world where people's capabilities can be measured and charts/stats are a normal topic. They can play an important part in the admission of children to school and sometimes, based on them, adults are employed too. Everything revolves around charts! The first time each person gets them checked is at birth. It doesn't necessarily matter how good they are, because they can be developed in time if the person works hard. However, I guess they are measured because if a chart is higher than the standard, then that person has a really good chance of getting far in life and parents want to know that (for their own ego).

Normal babies have low stats for physical abilities (like speed, strength etc.), because those can be developed, and their IQ and EQ average is somewhere between 90 and 120. The latter remain pretty much the same throughout life. Also, standard luck numbers are somewhere between 50 and 70.

There are very few exceptions that get higher stats. Usually, only royalty benefit of a better starting point, but not by much... somewhere between 10 and 15 more points per stat than normal kids.

Also, there is a "One In A Million" child that excels in one category (maybe 30 points higher than normal kids) and a "One In A Billion" that excels at 2 categories.

The ones that get better stats at luck are considered to be the happiest. In this world, your luck level pretty much determines how well you are going to get by in life. On the other hand, the ones that have luck lower than 40 can work the land for a rich lord in the best case... as for kids born with luck lower than 30... well... that's unheard of...

In this "lucky" world, in the House of Sapphire, a little boy was expected to be born. The House of Sapphire was the most prominent family on Albion, and the ruling dynasty in the Kingdom of Sapphire. They were renowned for being all "One In A Million" on luck and every 100 years, a "One In A Billion" was born into this family.

It was late spring, and Queen Clarion had just given birth. The whole kingdom was waiting to hear the "One In A Billion" be announced, curiously waiting to find out what other amazing characteristic he had besides great luck. As everyone waited nervously, The Reader came and announced the baby's charts. He started by listing exceptionally great stats for all physical abilities, unheard of before for any child. As he moved on to IQ and EQ, he announced 185. The King and Queen were overwhelmed and the people from all around the Kingdom of Sapphire were speechless... The child held great promise because of his exceptional rational/logical and emotional intelligence. Also, the fact that his physical stats were quite high meant that he could become an exceptional fighter. This was advantageous for a king because he would be able to defend himself, meaning there would be a lower risk of an assassination succeeding even if someone got past the royal guards. Not only that, but he could be an important asset in battle. If he was strong, he could lead the troops on the battlefield. A strong leader would rise the troops morale and will to fight. The country was not at war at the moment. After subduing their neighbors a few years back, they had peace. However, peace is a fine string that can easily be torn.

As everyone was in shock and awe, imagining how great the kingdom will become and how everyone will probably get to see gold and diamonds on the streets like they see dust and water now, The Reader's face turned pale. He couldn't believe his eyes. He double checked, but there was no mistaking it. With hesitation and great fear, he weakly announced the luck amount: 1.

Everyone present froze. With almost no luck, surviving was already a great feat.

Sadly, their worries soon came true...

Three months after birth, the child fell terribly ill and there was no cure found for his sickness. After six days of pain and struggling, the King and Queen were sending their son down the river in a sapphire basket...
