After that episode, they continued the exploration. Another minute passed by, it was ascertained there were no other injuries and no bullet or fragment inside. With an obstetrician, an emergency cesarean section was carried out. But the case didn't end there.

"What do you think, Dr. Luo?" The pediatrician asked after discovering that there's a penetrating entry wound in the infant's thoracoabdominal region. It meant that the bullet was somewhere inside the infant.

Seeing the baby, Luo Jingyi felt tightness in her chest. Fetal loss after trauma was prevalent in gunshot injury involving pregnant women. He survived, however, would he be able to withstand the next procedure before his heart would give out? 'How could such a tiny person suffer an ordeal like this?'

Luo Jingyi didn't think twice. "Let's find the bullet."

Hours passed before Luo Jingyi came out of the operating room and spoke to the woman's family. As she ran what she was going to say to them in her head, her thoughts went back inside the OR. While she was exploring the infant's abdomen, a faint memory from the past popped out just for a second.

This made her pause, and her grip on the scalpel tightened. It was hardly the moment to reminisce, but the baby's presence on the operating table made her remember the pain she felt the moment she lost her own child.

If Blue girl didn't talk, her absent-mindedness might have caused a rupture of an artery like Wen Minghua.

'Don't think about it, Jingyi. It's all in the past. Nobody can hurt you.' Luo Jingyi reminded herself.

Steadying her emotions, she put on a smile and walked forward. With a combination of medical and layman terms, she described the procedure she carried out. She told her immediate family that the bullet was found in the baby's abdomen, but they took it out without any difficulties. In the meantime, the infant would be moved to the NICU for postoperative care and respiratory support.

The pregnant woman's parents grasped Luo Jingyi's hands tightly, thanking her profusely. Their thankful words were enough for Luo Jingyi. What mattered to her was that she saved two lives.

Luo Jingyi went to change her scrubs in the changing room. Looking at the time, she worked five hours longer than her shift. This was a fairly common habit for her. Moreover, unlike other surgical departments where surgeries could be scheduled, it's different as a trauma surgeon. One could never predict when trauma patients would come to the hospital.

Luo Jingyi wore the extra clothes she brought to the hospital the previous day. Luckily, she did. If not, it was either she was going home in a pair of scrub suits or her stained clothes from yesterday. She sighed at the thought of her blouse and trousers, which got stained with bodily fluids. She would have no choice but to throw them away because it would be impossible to remove the stain.

Luo Jingyi had things to do first before leaving the hospital. She keyed in her notes on the computer. She heard someone talk from behind, trying to get her attention. She ignored the person.

Luo Jingyi skimmed the report again before clicking save. The medical report would directly save into the hospital's central system. With the advent of technology, medical records could be easily accessed nowadays without leafing through the medical records room to look for the file needed.

'She's furious.' Wen Minghua surmised. "Sorry, I made a mistake earlier. I didn't see the—" He got cut off by Luo Jingyi's words.

"Dr. Wen, if you don't even know how to differentiate a muscle from an artery, you'd better not step into the OR, or else the patient will die in your own hands."

Albeit Luo Jingyi's frosty tone, Wen Minghua smiled. "Are you concerned about me?"

Her brows knitted. 'What's the connection between the two? I'm directly criticizing him, but he thinks I'm worried?'

To Wen Minghua, her silence was an admission. The curve on his face grew wider. His guess was right. "You still love me, right?"

"What?!" Her voice grew louder. "Dr. Wen, are you delusional? Check yourself into the Psychiatry Department. You need to get your head tested."

Shaking her head, Luo Jingyi left him. She had goosebumps. 'Like him? In this life and the next, she would never fall for a man like him.'

Meanwhile, a petite woman came out of the elevator in the lobby. "Mrs. Wen, aren't you going upstairs to bring Dr. Wen's food?" The nurse asked the distraught Zhuang Na.

Zhuang Na passed the lunchbox to the nurse and hurriedly left without saying anything. The nurse was wondering what happened. In the end, the nurse was the one who delivered the lunchbox to Wen Minghua.

…...

"I heard your first surgery in the hospital is a success. Good job!" Dr. Bai praised Luo Jingyi. After walking away from Wen Minghua, Luo Jingyi went to see Dr. Bai.

She found Dr. Yao, who appeared to be very pale at the moment in her office. Seeing her, Dr. Yao lowered her head and apologized. "I'm sorry, Dr. Luo."

Luo Jingyi felt no anger towards the woman. It was just if Dr. Yao would be easily targeted by people with ill intentions, she would have difficulty moving up. Sighing in her head, she let it go. It wasn't for her to decide for the other doctor. "Have you checked what caused it?"

Dr. Yao nodded in embarrassment. She hadn't had the opportunity to have a meal since patients were wheeled in one after another. Hence, she grabbed the first food she found in the staff's lounge. Minutes later, she kept running to the bathroom. Apparently, the food contained laxatives.

When she told this to Luo Jingyi, it confirmed her suspicion that it was because of someone's ministrations. "Be careful next time." All Luo Jingyi could do was give the woman a reminder. It may be going to happen in the future again.

Dr. Bai signaled Dr. Yao to leave. When the latter was gone, Dr. Bai informed Luo Jingyi. "We already checked the security footage. Someone had already been warned for using such methods." While it was common for junior interns to resort this way to get into the operating room, Dr. Bai couldn't permit physicians to do that.

"Was it Wen Minghua?" Luo Jingyi voiced out her suspicion. When the VP of Diagnostic Center bent her head, Luo Jingyi felt more appalled by Wen Minghua. He certainly couldn't do anything well.

"Don't worry. Dr. Wen promised he won't do it next time."

"There is no next time. Because he isn't even allowed in my OR." Luo Jingyi expressed her dissatisfaction. Her opinion of Wen Minghua was low.

"I'm afraid that would be a problem. The Director assigned him to be your Second Assistant."

"What?!" Luo Jingyi couldn't believe that of all the people, why did the Director send Wen Minghua. It was bad news.

"The Director is Wen Minghua's uncle by marriage. Zhuang Na is the Director's niece." Dr. Bai explained the relation. Zhuang Na is the wife of Wen Minghua. Even if she wanted to help Luo Jingyi on this, she couldn't disobey the Director's words as well.

Luo Jingyi sighed in her head. She wanted no relationship or any connection with Wen Minghua. But she didn't want Dr. Bai to be put in a difficult situation as well. She would have to deal with it by herself.
