(Let's rewind a little bit to right before the girl's call for help)
Chen Nan, Chen Mu and Lin Que were reviewing Susu's chemotherapy results from the past year. Her body examinations showed positive signs of her cancer being under controlled after taking Chen Mu's medicine. Observing how well her body absorbed the medicine, she should be able to last until a matching donor appears or buy enough time for Chen Mu to figure out a cure for her condition.
Chen Mu held his most recent production in his hand and smiled proudly, "I'll definitely save her." Seeing his wide smile, Chen Nan wrapped his arm around Chen Mu and said, "Don't worry, with her flying rainbow results this time, it'll definitely work out at the end."
"He's right. Everything looks very good, and her cancer cells decreased too." Lin Que and Chen Nan complimented Chen Mu's efforts and patience in producing effective medicine for her. Just as they were discussing further about the next steps to take for Susu's treatments, their phones rang.
Immediately upon accepting the calls, they heard alarming screams for help. The situation did not sound good over the call and the guys rushed out of the lab to Susu's room. From the end of the hall, the guys witnessed Ariana shouting, pointing and chasing after a nurse. Chen Nan quickly said, "I'll chase after my wife. You two go check on Susu first."
Lin Que replied, "Run back to the other end of the hall and you might catch whoever your wife is trying to capture because the hospital is in a square shape. All the stairways and elevators are locked right now for sanitizing purposes. You'll be able to catch up to her quicker."
"Got it." Chen Nan patted Chen Mu's back before heading the opposite direction; hoping to assist Ariana in capturing that nurse. He took out his phone as he ran down the hall and called Zi Yan to inform her about Susu's condition. Since it was unclear about how bad the situation was, he panted out of breath and chokingly said, "Susu.. emergency. Lin Hospital. Now." He kept it short and on point, but his words were enough to trigger a heart attack if it was Professor Luo Xia who picked up.
( Back to Chen Mu and Lin Que )
Chen Mu's hand gripped the new medicine container tightly in his palms as he reached Susu's room. His heart was racing abnormally fast as if someone had hammered and pounded on his chest heavily. The smell of antiseptics had never clogged up his nostrils as strongly as it did now. His legs were numb, but it continued moving until he saw Susu gasping for air through her mouth. The medicine container dropped from his hand as he rushed to her side.
Lily was trembling by her side; broken down in tears. Chen Mu shouted, "Get the ventilator!!! She can't breathe!!" Lin Que ran out, demanded for assistance and alerted two professional nurses as a standby. The nurses reacted fast and pushed trays of necessary tools into the room.
Chen Mu continued talking to Susu to make sure she understood and does what he instructs, "Listen to me. It'll be okay. Everything will be fine. Follow what I say." She nodded and caught on with his instructions. Soon, her breathing became more constant with the help of a ventilator.
Although Lily was trembling vigorously under immense pressure in the room, she explained what had happened to them during the time that the guys were gone from the room. Lin Que rubbed his temples, "She wasn't supposed to get another infusion until at least half an hour from now. I had already told the nurse to change it in an hour five times before I went into the lab! How's her condition?"
"It's an allergy reaction. Lin Que, check the drips and see what type of drugs was injected. We need to figure out which drug it is and clear it from her system. How long has this infusion been going on?" Chen Mu extracted everything that was attached to Susu's arm. Redness, rashes and blisters were starting to form on areas of her arm.
"A little over twenty minutes." Lily checked her watch and crumbled the pages of the magazine that was on the table. She blamed herself for not asking more questions and being more attentive to details. Perhaps symptoms had already shown since the beginning, but they were too concentrated on their conversations that they took Susu's behaviors lightly.
Lin Que and one of the nurses walked out to check the trays and realized that no drugs were missing from Susu's treatment. The first drug was the only one missing. He triple-checked every bottle to make sure that the containers belonged to Susu and the titles of the medicine corresponded with his original commands.
"Fuck." He ran back into the room and took the remaining portion of the drug to the lab. As he entered and exited the room like a winter's breeze, he said, "nothing was missing from the trays." Chen Mu's eyes widened with his hands slowly closing into a tight fist. He double checked Susu's body to make sure she wasn't suffering from more symptoms that wasn't visually detectable.
"Susu, I will press on different areas of your body. Move your hand or even a finger is fine if it hurts, okay?" She lifted her index finger, and he relaxed a little, "Good girl. I'm going to begin now." She lifted her finger once again. When his fingers pressed on her chest gently, she listed her finger and squinted.
"Does it hurt because I'm pressing on it? If yes, lift one finger. If no, two fingers." She lifted two fingers up with her palms against her chest. As anxious and nervous as he was, he needed to be maintain his composure because only calmness could help him find a solution for her.
"Did it hurt when your breathing difficulties started to occur?" She lifted one finger up, and he nodded, "okay. Okay. It'll be alright. I'll figure it out." Since Lin Que was in the lab, all Chen Mu could do was wait and check on Susu every few minutes to make sure no new symptoms arise. He could see sweat beads form on her forehead. All he and Lily could do is wait and stay by her side.
Chen Mu asked Lily to repeat everything that had happened in the room after they had stepped out to the lab. He listened attentively to make sure he didn't misheard anything. When they were finished, they realized that something was wrong with Susu. Her eyes were slowly closing and no matter how they called her name, she wasn't responding. The good news was that her vital signs were normal for the time being.
