Chapter 12 - Chapter 11

Axion's P.O.V.

Rick took a moment to think, scratching his chin and staring at the table. "Your mother is safe. The Elder was able to get everyone to the safe house in the Silver Mountains. He sent me a message this morning."

I sit back in relief, not realizing I had tensed up.

"The Elder hasn't decided what to tell your mother, he's worried how she will react. Currently, she thinks we're on our way to the safe house. She started worrying and stressing, so the Elder is trying to find the best way to tell her," he finishes. "I don't agree with lying, but too much stress on your mother could be bad for her health."

I nod my head in agreement. Mom has always been protective and she would always stress if I got even the tiniest of injuries. "That's probably for the best."

"It is. I trust the Elder will figure it out. I don't know how long all of this will take. We have to find the other mark-holders, one in each realm. You and the boy in Octavian are the only two to have their marks appear. We don't know who the others are yet," Rick babbles and stares at the table again, lost in thought.

I knit my brows together in confusion. I remember the Elder saying there was a person from each realm, excluding Desistar. We're supposed to be guardians and there's 5 others like me. I wonder what they're like. I've never met anyone from the other races, only read about them. I feel both excited and afraid. "So there's a boy in Octavian? And he's like me?" I ask.

"Yes, and he's the only one so far to appear. Soleal, Silvernial, Illius, and Angelium haven't seen any signs of marks on their people. Hopefully they'll start appearing soon."

"Yeah," I reply. I pick up my coffee and sip it slowly. It's sweet and creamy. "So, can I use magic? I've never seen it before. I don't know anything about it really.

"Yes, I'm going to be teaching you as we make our way to our next destination. I'm sure you've looked through the bag that was on your bed. It had a few books in it to help you study. I used those when I was learning."

"Oh, thank you. I'll make sure to read them." I pick up the fork on my plate and take a large bite of eggs. Oh my goodness these are so good, I think. I shovel in a few more bites. I chew them and savour each bite. I'm sure we won't have quite the same food when we travel. I feel my stomach rumble and I blush.

Rick laughs. I eat some more eggs, taking the time to think about what to ask next, but I draw a blank. I finish off the eggs quicker than expected. My stomach still feels empty.

"You know using magic uses a lot of energy and if you use a lot of energy then you'll be hungrier. Maybe you've been using magic without realizing it," Rick suggests.

"I don't think so. I don't even know what magic is or what it looks like or...." I trail off and drink some more of my coffee.

The waitress soon shows up with Rick's order. His eyes brighten and follow the food. As soon as she sets it down he starts to devour you. "Thank you," he says in between a couple bites.

"You're banana bread will be done soon, I'll have it packaged and brought out as soon as it's done." She says.

"Alright, thank you," I smile and let Rick eat. My stomach threatens to rumble again. "Can I get some more eggs?"

She smiles and takes my plate, "Of course. Give me a moment." She returns a few minutes later with another full plate of eggs. "Enjoy."

I dig in and we enjoy our meal and coffee. I finally think of some questions when I'm done. "So what's with the blue and purple stone in my bag?" I ask.

Rick gulps down his coffee and wipes his mouth. "You mean the Whisper Stone? Small and oval shaped?"

"Yes. So what is a....Whisper Stone?"

"A Whisper Stone let's you record messages and send them to people using magic. They are mined by Dwarves in Soleal in a special cave. They are all unique in color and pattern."

"Is it faster than a letter by courier?"

"It takes a mere moment to send and be received. So yes."

"How does it work?" I'm eager to know. Maybe I can use to send messages to mother once the Elder explains what's going on.

Before Rick can answer our banana bread arrives. The waitress wrapped it in cloth. When I take it from her it is warm even through the cloth. "Thank you, again." I say and she walks away, smiling.

"Let me get ready and grab some money. We need to go buy some supplies in town. I'll put the bread in my room for now." Rick takes the delicious smelling bread and heads up the stairs. I'm looking forward to having a slice of it later.

I sit back in my chair and look out the window again. No children or people passing by now. The sun has risen and it's bright out now. A few more people came in while me and Rick were talking, I hadn't even noticed. A bunch of guys are now sitting at a table in the corner playing cards and a couple at the bar are flirting and touching each other.

Rick please hurry up. This place makes me more nervous in the day. I tap my fingers on the table and wait for his footsteps. Tap, tap, tap, above me and then Rick jogs down the stairs. I spring to my feet and follow him out of the inn, eager to go somewhere else.
