Once I was at a camp.
The day was going to be hot. Temperatures raising into the 100's. So the camp leader thought it was a good idea to assign us to painting fences, an acre long fence with no shade on it. So we each got a bucket of waterproof paint and a paint brush. 8 kids to paint an acre long fence! Well we ended up doing it and by the end we were dehydrated and tired. Since our water bottles had gone dry a while ago one of the LIT's had the brilliant idea to fill them up in a nearby cabin.
Me and another LIT walked in with the water bottles, as soon as we entered we widened our eyes and I ran out and yelled to the rest "ITS AIR CONDITIONED!!!" Everyone made a mad dash toward the cabin. When we walked in half of the LIT's collapsed on the carpet. The other half helped me prepare the water bottles, and then we spent a good 3 minutes on the carpet in the cabin. Afterword we went back out and gathered the buckets and paintbrushes to a nearby camp fire site. Later a leader came to check out work. The leader said we could now do the benches in the camp since there is extra paint. As all the LIT's groaned we got back to work. Secretly though since no leaders were around, we would all take turns in the air conditioned cabin. As we got done on top of the mountain we had to go down to the bottom and do the half acre fences and 15+ picnic benches down there. After we got done we went to the laser tag section of the camp to do the remaining benches. At this point one of the LITs just up and disappeared, we would later find out they went back up and took a shower in the cabins. So we had 7 tweens/teens assigned to move and paint, then move back picnic benches that took 10 adults to move. There were even leaders who were nearby watching us as they were taking care of a group of kids... so when we attempted to move them, one by one the LIT's got injured. The first one got their wrist sprained. The second we accidentally dropped the table on their foot and hurt it... and the third, the only male, fell into a gopher hole and sprained his leg when we were moving the tables. So it took 4 LITs including myself to paint and move the remaining picnic tables... the nurse was busy that day. Remember we don't get paid for this. And this all happened in the morning so by the time lunch rolls around over half of the LIT's are missing or hospitalized For casts.
This was still the first week of camp...
