"Detective," Brook questions.
"Yes, Ms. Baxter," he answers as he drives her and Paullina home.
"My sister told me something strange last night."
"What," asks Gage curious.
"She said she shot the crazy clown man, not Paulie."
Detective Gage sighs, "Yeah, but once I got the ball rolling at Paulie I couldn't stop it. I tried. He said he did it so the Kingston clan wouldn't go after Bea. He put the bulls-eye on his own back to protect her."
"It's hard for me to imagine her doing something like that."
"You need to remember, she had just been kidnapped, raped, just learned she was pregnant and all of their lives were in danger. Carl was going to kill them."
Brook exhaled sadly, "I can't believe she's gone."
"She nor Paulie deserved their fates," replied Detective Gage soberly. "Life isn't fair and we're promised nothing. You can pursue life, liberty and happiness, but you may never obtain them. At least, they found a little happiness with each other."
Gage doubted his words were of any comfort to Brook Baxter as he dropped her and Paullina off. It certainly wasn't going to get that beautiful little girl her mommy and daddy back.
As he drives back to where Bea's body lays frozen, he tries to imagine why she would have been out walking in the middle of the night, where was she headed? Then he spots the building where Paulie had lived for several years before he met Bea. He sighs. She must have been headed there and didn't make it just like Paulie didn't make it home to her. But at least they're together now. Somehow Detective Gage is sure of that.
