I felt the smaller buildings roof with a sharp pain in my ankle, I started to cry out before covering my mouth. I couldn't get myself caught just yet. I looked up from where I jumped. Although I didn't literally jump to the ground, the fall just to the smaller portion of the building made me wish I did jump to my death. I looked at my ankle and rubbed it slightly, grimacing as I slowly stood up again. I looked around the roof. It was rather plain, the only real color being from the red bricks and the pale green door that led back into the hospital. I looked over to the electrical system.
It would be a bad idea to cause a commotion this early...
But wouldn't it make it harder for Belial to find me? Or to get caught in general?
The dragon seemed to ponder this for a moment before tsking and grumbling.
Thank you, winged-lizard.
My mockery got me a strong scrape on my mind, causing a my head to throb, "ow!"
I could feel the dragon chuckle, my mind slightly buzzed as I moved to the electrical system.
Wait, what if we started a fire instead?
"What??" I exclaimed, "no! People could die!"
And people on life support will die if the power goes out! Who cares about a few dumb mortals, they are all going to die anyways.
"I am still a 'mortal' ya know."
Not anymore, remember. You are just like me now. You don't belong with these humans, we belong to ourselves now.
I wanted to question him but I felt an impending danger. I looked up at the hospital room I had jumped from. My eyes hurting suddenly as I felt a strong wave of power course through me.
Look. That, is what we need to run from.
I stared in horror as I saw it standing inside the room. Those eyes already watching me as its face contorted to snarl.
We need to run, Kasey..
I could almost smell the burning flesh of my classmate again, my mind bottling up and shutting down that memory as I felt a growing sickness.
Dammit!! Run!!
The roar sent power striking through me, my arm burning like hell as it glowed purple, a large cloud of smoke appearing. My skin was torn from where the power had forced its way through me. My lungs locking up as I went into shock.
"Dammit, Kasey!" The dragon roared. It was no longer the size of a rat. It was the size of a huge beast, just its body height alone was greater than an elephants. I slowly looked up to see its beautiful scales glistening slightly in the sun as it took a deep breath. His wings spread out slightly as the markings in his wings glowed, he opened his jaws. Flames were instantly coating part of the building; screams erupting. He looked down at me, fury burning right into me as he hissed. "People will die if you hesitate like that. Do not freeze. You don't have the ability to anymore."
"I...I..." The screams were making me want to tear my ears off. The fear and horror. The smell...
I gasped as I felt something large grab me, I looked up at the cold indifferent purple eyes as it picked me up. "Let's move." He held me close as he started to flap his powerful wings. Wings that could make a tornado if he tried. "Where do you live?"
I remembered the contract and felt a small prick of guilt.
His purple eyes scanned me and growled slightly, "fine. I'll burn the whole town."
My eyes darkened, "It's straight ahead. Two blocks from that tower over there..."
Satisfaction seemed to calm the rage of the claws that clutched me, its speed taking us over there in seconds. "We have to hurry, humans won't stall him for long. You have to make it quick."
"Over there...." I numbly pointed at my house, the fate and pain that was coating me was almost unbearable as the dragon carefully landed in the street. No one around me reacted. They couldn't see me. Or him. They will only find a corpse soon.
"Ill give you five minutes. If you aren't back by then, I will come in after you. I am not going to die because you are to attached to these despicable creatures." The dragon let me go near the door, glowering down at passing humans, his wings stretched outwards into the sky. He was uncomfortable. And he was right.
I slowly moved into the house. My mom was in the living room, peacefully folding laundry. I no longer felt anything. The knife was easy to pick up. Its silver blade and wooden handle fitting awkwardly in my hands. I never killed someone before.
The memories of my father making me close my eyes, i slowly felt myself picking up the pieces of my former self, and throw them away. The lizard was right. I don't belong here anymore.
I slowly moved into the living room, my mother still humming and listening to the show she put on. She didn't notice me. Not even when I walked in front of her. She couldn't see me. I looked at the knife, the light that flickered on the blade shaking. Could I do this? To my own mother?
Finish what you started? That's what he said, right? And if I don't demons will surely be coming after her. I shouldn't make her suffer... Not anymore. Losing dad almost broke her. Losing me....She will be shattered. I moved closer to her, my hand gently touching her cheek as I felt a tear slide down. I thought it would be hard. To be difficult. I thought I would feel guilty. But the knife went in as if she was simply a bar of butter. She didn't move, her body shaking. I twisted the knife, looking away as she spat up blood. As I pulled the blade back, I didn't even turn my head down to watch her body teeter over, and collapse. I looked at the blade, the blood dripping away.
"I'm sorry mother. But I just can't die yet." I finally looked back, her eyes were open, he face turned towards me as her body laid there, still expressing her shock. "You didn't deserve this."
I dropped the knife and turned to the door, my pace was slow, deliberate. I should be screaming. Mourning. Feeling guilty, I should be regretting my decision. I opened the door and look at the dragon. Its eyes twinkling slightly as he picked me up. He set me down on his back and looked at the house. "Well done."
"Take me to the underworld." My voice was empty. Cold. This was not who I am. But, then again, who am I supposed to be?
"The name is Shobek, and now, I am your weapon." The dragon took off, its wings pushing powerful waves of air downwards in order to move us up.
"I, am your strength." The dragon roared and then dove straight down, a blast of purple fire suddenly opening a tunnel through the ground. No, not a tunnel.. A portal. Shobek brought his wings close to his body, only when we reached the other side did he dare open them again. We glided for awhile before he finally landed. my eyes adjusting to the scenery again.
I hated it.
But some part of me... felt like it was home.
