Chapter 15 - Relaxation for a fool

"You know I really thought you were trying to make a move on me."

After finishing my ice cream, Sin insisted that I should just lie down for a bit and relax.

That was nearly an hour ago.

Sin and I were lying on our backs in complete silence, watching the fliminas I summoned dance in the air.

Sin turned to face me. We weren't close enough for my aura to affect him, but I kept a strong barrier up just in case. I had no experience with being this close to someone for this long. Even the other Hunters were wary of my innate heat, often changing their route just to avoid meeting me in a narrow corridor. I don't think they did it on purpose, but somewhere deep down it still hurt.

"I made a move yesterday." He said. "We both know how that turned out."

"So, you're giving up this 'contest' of yours?"

Sin turned on his side, propping his head up with his hand. His dark chocolate hair flowed messily between his fingers.

"Now why would you say that?" He moved his hand towards me, but stopped midway. "I'm certain this is the longest you've been around someone without a reason."

I huffed. "I've been here for one and a half days. Not much time to just hang out."

"That's not what I meant." He said seriously.

I felt the blood creep into my cheeks.

"I'm not a people person." I turned my head the other way, examining the intricate patterns painted on his wall; the tendrils and thorns of some ancient plant.

"I noticed. You're avoiding our classmates like they have the plague."

"They are useless." I said, turning my head back. The vampire was watching my every move.

"Ouch."

Silence settled between us as Sin studied me with a serious expression.

"Why did you come here? Why aren't you homeschooled, if you hate being here so much?"

It was a question that my sister anticipated to show up sooner or later, so she had me memorize a perfect, logically sound response. I obviously couldn't just tell him that I was a Hunter looking for the culprit of the recent murders in the city.

Obviously.

"I'm a Hunter. I was sent here to find the Reaper of Dreams." I said.

I watched as Sin's face turned from smiling to pale. His body tensed, his aura coating him like a robe made of icicles.

I summoned my badge and tossed it on the bed.

Sin was so surprised he even forgot to breathe. He sat up, putting some distance between himself and that infamous piece of metal. He stared at it for a bit, then shook himself, and picked it up. He held it like it was a live grenade, slowly turning it around, looking at every detail.

"Fuck." He said after a minute.

"Well put." I sat up as well, and held out my hand for the badge. He obediently dropped it into my palm, and I made it disappear, hoping that would help Sin cope with the shock.

I didn't think he would freak out this much. He was a bloody prince after all. One that should be familiar with all sorts of Arcanae.

"I thought you were more…informed about us." I carefully got off the bed.

Sin was slightly shaking, and I caught a couple emotions chasing each other on his face.

The vampire finally looked at me, with a mix of fear and awe.

"I only know that you were the fucking boogiemen of my childhood." He snapped.

Maybe keeping my identity secret had a reason after all. I sat down on his side of the bed, laying my hand on his arm. He shuddered.

I tried to conjure my best imitation of mom. She always knew how to soothe people.

"Did you hurt someone? I said calmly. He quickly shook his head.

"Did you broke the law?" He shook his head again.

"Then I have no reason to hunt you, or hurt you." I finished and stood back up.

"Were you trying to comfort me?" He said after a couple moments.

"Well…yeah." I shrugged.

"You suck at comforting." He joked, closely watching my reaction. I smiled at him.

He stood up, and finally started to breathe again. He ran his fingers through his unruly hair, trying to comb the shock out of it.

"Are you willing to help me?" I asked.

"Yeah… yeah, I'll help you catch the bastard." He replied, still out of breath. "But first, I'm sorry, but I really need to..."

He went to the mini fridge, and took a bag of blood out of it. He poured it into a cup and quickly gulped some of it down. His following grimace made me believe that cold blood wasn't his favorite.

I concentrated on the drink, quickly heating it to body temperature.

He didn't grimace after the next gulp.
