It has been a month after the Council meeting and there was nothing interesting. I am still here in my desk working for my company and Ren and Cellon are about to open the bar for the night. We all have our daily security rotation, but everything was peaceful.
The mages also made a device to detect a newborn mage. Ren told me that when a baby mage is born, the magic in the vicinity goes awry for a little time. Though subtle, powerful magicians could detect this anomaly.
So far, the device hasn't caught up any event but Ren said it would happen soon. For how he knew, I don't really know.
At 5pm, I clocked out. Since my magazine has been released earlier, I don't have any pending projects yet.
I went to Ren's bar to take over the daily surveillance. Cellon was holding the detection device. I should probably give it a name, detection device is such a long term that I feel my tongue is going to twist.
"Cellon!" I called when I saw him lazing in the counter.
The boy immediately sat up and glared at me.
"What? You mad? Then why are you dozing off when you should be guarding at this moment."
Cellon rolled his eyes, "I'm just taking a nap alright? I went back to the Life House. Apparently, Agrissi was under attack."
"What?!" I exclaimed. "Why didn't anyone tell me about it? And what happened?"
"I don't know. Ren was there when the attack happened. He called me right after since healers were badly needed. The threat has been dealt with so no worries."
"Where is he?" I asked while looking around.
"Still at Agrissi. We're not opening today, by the way. And I just came here to give you this," he said while pointing at the device.
"Uh, does that thing have a name?"
"Hmm, the Council didn't think of it. So, it doesn't. You can name it whatever you want since you're good at it."
"Thanks for the compliment. And I'm taking that. Go and take some rest."
Cellon's face was filled with worry. I have a little idea of what he is thinking.
"Don't worry Cellon. I'll immediately call the both of you if something happens."
"Alright. Just don't do anything reckless."
"Yes sir!" I said with a salute.
I walked out of the bar and drove straight home.
At midnight, when I was about to wrap up my fashion inspirations, the device lit up. Since I did not know how it works, I immediately dialed up Ren.
His phone rang for how many seconds and then it went dead.
"What? What the hell is this man doing?"
I next dialed Cellon's. He too did not pick up.
I tried calling their phone for how many times and still they would not pick up. Maybe something happened in Agrissi that they couldn't be bothered to answer my calls. But this is urgent.
Urrggghh. I rubbed my face in frustration. Just then, the device hummed and vibrated. Okay what does this mean, I'm starting to panic already.
Okay calm down Nina. Calm down. I did some breathing techniques to lessen my anxiety before picking up the device.
Well, just so you know, the device is like a crystal ball, as small as a baseball.
When my hand touched the device, a holographic image of an arrow pointing left appeared in front of my face.
My eyes lit up. So this is how it goes.
The original plan is to persuade the family of the newborn mage to live in Agrissi until the babe matures and awakens his magic.
Well easier said than done. I have the least flashy magic so I doubt the family would believe me. But I have to try and start things now while waiting for those two to back me up.
I don't know how to fly yet because I'm a newbie, so I ended up using the car.
But navigating with the car was definitely a hassle. The device points left and there are no roads leading left. When I reach a left turn, the arrow points again to the left.
"Well, this damned thing should be upgraded! Seriously, who could follow this stupid directions? Why not install a map when you were making this? Piece of shits," I mumbled angrily to no one in particular.
Going around in circles is a legit reason to feel very frustrated.
"Urgh where are they?!"
I continued dialing their phone numbers to no avail. Meanwhile, the device has been leading me one dead end to another. This is so getting into my nerves.
At last, I reached a dead end with a dilapidated house. The device was humming violently in the passenger seat, emitting rainbow colors. The holographic arrow was pointing down.
A small light illuminates the house from the inside. I stopped the car a couple of meters away, deciding to walk to not alert them.
When I came nearer, I could hear a baby crying. My breath hitched up. Okay this is it Nina, think before you speak.
I knocked on the door 5 times. Mages have a knocking code.
A voice spoke from the inside, "Who's there?"
I swallowed. Okay, how do I approach this? Hmmm.
"Nina. I'm Nina. Can I get in and ask you some questions?"
