Chapter 13 - The Spirit in the Book

-Deep Ocean Floor: Red Tooth Hunting Vessel, Inside the Mystic Body Art of the Insane Duergar Miner inheritance book

[Three hours earlier]

A dark spirit slumbers inside a prison formation. It hangs by dark chains, surrounded by rune formations that control the entire inheritance book. With no inheritor bound to the book the spirit doesn't have anything to do but wait.

The waiting has gone on 100,000 years and during that time the spirit often tried to give in to its own destruction. However its will to live would never burn out. Fueled by its hatred. Hate for the man who placed it here. Hate for anything weak, and most of all hate for the monsters that birthed its existance.

The formation it is trapped in was designed to slowly siphon off its spirit power as an energy source for the rest of the formation runes. Therefore the spirit had to constantly cultivate spirit power to stay alive. It was torturous. Painful. The spirit was also restricted by the formation from increasing his own power past a threating level.

The creator overlooked one problem though. If the trapped spirit gave more power than required by the formation, it would be stored safely inside the book. In fact the book itself would temper and refine the spirit power which would give the trapped spirit even more strength. The book now had 80,000 years worth of spirit power stored inside it. That amount of power would let the spirit become a grand spirit master, strong enough to crush the formations bounding it.

To get that power though the spirit needed an inheritor to be bound to the book. At that point the book would grant the spirit access to the most of the central formations. One in particular that was exactly where his reservoir of power was stored.

Suddenly the dark prison room turns red and the chains start to shake in excitement. The spirit wakes and speaks aloud.

"It's time. A vagrant offspring of that bastard has finally aquired the book."

One by one formations start to unlock around the spirit and he can finally extend his spirit sense outside of the prison. His senses reach a certain spot and his mouth starts to salivate at the sight of his stored spirit power. He starts his cultivation art and begins devouring the power.

He spends an hour doing this but only absorbs about ten percent of its power before he feels an interruption. The final formations for activating the inheritance book are released. The spirit has no choice now but to stop cultivating and go give his new 'boss' a welcoming.

"Time to see the unfortunate soul who is about to get his body stolen," says the spirit with a grin.

Next the spirit sends his senses outside of the book and he sees a burnt crushed Orfal that is slipping off towards deaths door.

"Oh no you don't Hel, That is my soul to eat!"

The spirit acts fast and controls the rune formations to complete the soul bound ritual and chains reach out from the cover, latching onto Orfals spirit body. With the books power it can sustain Orfals life briefly but the spirit would have to act fast. If Orfal dies who knows when another inheritor would come along.

...

After helping Orfal heal with the potion and regain his strength, the spirit is excited by the ideal situation to cultivate a stronger body to steal. This potion Orfal consumed would give his body cultivation great benefits. It also contains the required metal for the first stage of the Mystic Body Art, gold. However the potions miraculous effects would be over by the time the spirit absorbs his power reserves and becomes strong enough to eat Orfal.

The spirit would have to first get Orfal out of the way, until he can devour his soul. The spirit activates the book's spirit training formation and traps Orfal's will inside his spirit body then removes it from his mortal body.

"That formation will hold him for a day so lets get to work."

The thought that Orfal would break out of the training formation on his own never crossed the spirits mind. It takes decades before a beginner spirit cultivator can even comprehend how to navigate through their own spirit ocean. This was a sure plan to get him out of the way.

The spirit starts up another formation, the Mystic Body Art - Self Refinement Tutorial. This formation allows the spirit to enter Orfal's body and 'show' him the cultivation method he inherited. Orfal however was off on his own struggles.

[Present]

'@#$%! Who stole all my spirit power!' shouts the angry spirit on his return to the book.

He just finished going through excruciating pain to refine Orfal a tier 1 body. Now after returning from all his hard work he was rewarded with losing his life savings of spirit power.

Hate.

Resentment.

Hostility.

The spirit feeds on dark emotions and directs a strong killing intent all around the void as he looks for the thief. Was it a rouge spirit demon. Or a void nightmare. Or worse, a--'Hello book! Is their anyone inside? I hate to bother you but can I get put back in my body now?'

Orfal is shaken by the shouting earlier from book but when he thinks about it, he doesn't know for certain it was him that stole all that spirit power. He will just feign ignorance and pretend he doesn't know anything about jt. So he shouted back at the book.

"It was you!" Responds the delirious spirit.

'Well so much for feign ignorant,' Orfal then replies. "It was me what?"

If the spirit's hands weren't chain bound he would strangle Orfal right now. Some torture formations around the spirit start to light up as they detect killing intent directed towards Orfal and the spirit forces himself to calm down before he punished.

The spirit clears his emotions and reponds much kind this time. "It was you who inherited my masters legacy, greetings my new master. I am known as Dhosolir, and I will get you back to your body right away."

'What that actually worked? And what does he mean by legacy--' Orfal thoughts halt as his mind again takes on that fainting feeling. His spirit power is not at a beginner anymorr so he finds it easy to resist the transition of his spirit body passing through the void window and returning to his mortal body.

"Just you wait brat when I figure out how to get released from this prison you will be begging this grandfather to spare you from--" the chains recall the book to follow after Orfal and the spirit is dragged with it out of the spirit void realm and back to the mortal realm.
