Chapter 19 - Clueless Boy

I've always been clueless about girls. When I was in middle school. During a P. E. field day, there was a girl who asked if she could play basketball on the court that I was using. Prior to speaking with me, she had been chatting with a group of her friends. I figured that she wanted to play with them so I offered my ball to her along with the court. She then said that she didn't want the court but that she wanted to play basketball. I thought to myself surely she wants to have fun with her friends. So I insisted that they take the court. I was playing by myself so it'd be selfish for me to take it up for myself. She then tried to make it clear that it was me she wanted to play with. It didn't make logical sense to me that she'd leave her friends behind and I figured that she was just being nice. It took a lot of convincing but then realized that she actually did want to play with me.

"I'm Maya," she said with a kind gentle smile.

"Noa..." as soon as I said that the P.E. teacher blew his whistle to alert us that P.E. was over.

A few weeks had passed and one of my friends from reading class mentioned that there was this girl who was really cute and that her name was Maya. I knew from his description that he was talking about her. I became more aware of the opposite sex at that moment and it clicked to me maybe she had a crush on me back then.

That explained why her friends were behind her they were probably secretly cheering her on. This thought made me happy and in turn, I grew to have a crush on her. But I didn't see her anymore. Weeks had gone by and I had found out that Maya had already started seeing someone else.

That was the end of my crush.

I had been overweight back then and I couldn't bring myself to believe that anyone could like a fat kid like me. It was as if my brain could not grasp the concept.

The next year I would end up having a large growth spurt which unexplainably made me slim down. Strangely enough, I had weighed the same so it was as if my weight was redistributed into my bones.
