Chapter 9 - Rockfall

As the day came again, Leon woke up with sun blinding him and warming him from the cold ground. Looking around Leon noticed that Rin wasn't with him on the campsite. Feeling a moment of panic Leon let up and looked around.

"Rin!" Leon shouted into the forest. His heart felt a little restless as the image of the dryad in the forest coming after made him sweat a little. A couple of moments later rustling through the trees Rin came back, her arms full of mushrooms and herbs.

"What's with all the shouting?" Rin said in her usual irritated tone. Putting down the collected food she pulled out the pan from Leon's pack and sat it on the coals of the campfire prepping for breakfast.

"Ah it was nothing" Leon said awkwardly.

"If it was nothing you don't have to shout. My ears are already pretty sensitive"

"You mean unlike the rest of you" Leon replied back smugly. Rin puffed her cheeks in annoyance but couldn't give a witty enough reply. Stirring some of the found mushrooms and herbs it was a fragrant smell wafting towards Leon. Rin handed over his portion as she ate hers. Rin also happened to be chewing a herb at the same time.

"You're really good at cooking. I'd be happy to let you cook for the rest of the trip while I keep an eye on other things" Leon said as he ate some of the served food. He could a slight flush developing however he tried to ignore it.

"Even if we were in the middle of nowhere I could always find us something to eat" Rin said with a grin. Leon put down his bowl as he tugged at the neckline of his shirt. His breaths was coming out hot and heavy, as he could feel his whole body begun to feel warm.

"Wait did you put something in the food" Leon said in a panic as he was having trouble keeping himself calm. Rin started laughing hysterically at the sight.

"Its nothing harmful" Rin said reassuringly "It's just an aphrodisiac" Rin's smile seemed incredibly dangerous to Leon at the moment. Leon had trouble holding himself back as the girl laughed herself silly. His anger was already boiling over and he leapt on top of Rin. Her laughter died down but she still had a smug face while Leon was pinning her down.

"Even I have my limits" Leon said in a exhausted tone. Rin barely acknowledge it and shoved some of the same herb she had been chewing into Leon's mouth. After rolling it around his mouth the flush he had felt grow begun to fade and he calmed down. Sitting back down he chewed the clump of herb thoroughly while eyeing Rin.

"I may not be personally acquainted with this, but I have heard many things from my family on the ways to catch a man." Rin said slyly. Leon's forehead furrowed as dark lines appeared.

"I'd hope that a girl of your age would be just a little less shameless" Leon said with an annoyed tone. Honestly if she felt like it it wouldn't take much to make his life a misery he thought to himself.

"I think this might be a better option actually" Leon said as an idea begun to form. Rin gave him a questioning look.

"I was sure it was only an aphrodisiac. I didn't put in something that would someone stupid" Rin said as she shifted through her collected materials.

"No, no. What I mean is that you should be a medicine lady. You already know this and it would mean that people wouldn't think of you as to strange" Leon begun to explain to Rin. Although Rin was intentionally trying to annoy Leon she wasn't stupid.

"Mmm, I do know a number of usages for plants and animals. I could tell by smell with my eyes closed. Ah, metaphorically speaing of course" Rin said causing Leon to shake his head a little.

"Then from this day forward you are a medicine lady and I am your escort. Keep your name the same and it should be fine to keep your origin the same too" Leon said satisfied that he had finally solved the problem that had been slowly giving him headache.

"Do I include being raised by a dryad?" Rin said in a flat tone. Leon gave a definitive look at Rin.

"No monsters, no nymphs, no dryads and certainly you cannot mention you can talk with animals. This would be similar if the sky would fall on us or if the earth became round" Leon said in an exasperated tone, it was almost impossible to keep this girl under control. Turning to look at her Leon could she had a grin stretched across her face. This little Leon thought as he gritted his teeth.

"We'll keep to this story for anyone we come across. If you're not sure just leave the talking with me" The two of them kicjed some dirt over the campfire and snuffing out the last of the embers. Tiding up their packs they left and headed back on the trail.

The day passed with an ease of the time slowly rolling by. Along the way Rin had picked up a stick that she would occasionally drag with her as she made a long line in the dirt from they direction they walked.

"Hey, hey. Leon look behind us" Rin said pointing behind them. Leon glanced back and could see the line stretching back further then he could see with his eyes as he shook his head.

"If you want to maintain the roads you wouldn't have to be a medicine lady anymore" Leon said as he rolled his eyes at Rin. He couldn't tell what it was whenever they talked but it seemed that Rin had changed, and yet it begun to annoy him but not truly in a bad way.

"I bet you I can make a trail that stretches across the land at this rate" Rin said triumphantly waving the stick on the ground to vary her line. Leon kept walking until he noticed that Rin had suddenly stood at a stand still.

"Rin?" Leon asked. Rin turned and walked back a few paces, turning around a few times and waving her stick in the air she walked back to him.

"Leon, something's not right" Rin said, a slightly worried tone in her voice already had Leon slightly panicked.

"What is it?" Leon said hoping it wouldn't be too serious.

"Everything is slowly starting to seem fuzzy" Rin said as she tried walking in different spots. It was serious.

"What do you mean?" Leon asked hoping to clarify.

"It just seems like I can't see very well" Rin stopped for a moment and placed the branch she was holding on the ground. Doing this action she waved the stick and also placed on the ground for a few moments.

"For some reason I can see better when the stick is on the ground. I don't know why my sight is getting harder to see" Rin voiced. Leon couldn't tell if she truly was worried so he stayed a little closer as Rin trailed her stick on the ground. As they continued to walk the trail let to the top of a mountain trail a number of rocks had already fallen across the trail as the cliff along the side was broken.

"Seems like your little friend was right after all" Leon commented as looked to see if they could climb over the rock fall.

"You'd be surprised at what they can see. I could probably recite a different tragic love story everyday if you prefer" Rin said, her eyes weren't focused directly at Leon anymore but she smiled slyly regardless.

"There are some things that are better left as a mystery in this world" Leon replied. He had begun to climb the fallen rocks and held a hand out to Rin. Rin missed a few times but then grabbed on tightly as Leon pulled her up over the rocks as they both slid down the other side. Leon looked around and saw a carriage that had been overturned the horse was still attached. He could hear the faint sounds of a person groaning in pain.
