Chapter 16 - The Korean War

It took a long travel before they reached Korean borders. Upon deployment, Parker returned to being a "Good Soldier". Fighting alongside North Koreans, he did his best as a good soldier, never thinking of his enemies as human beings.

The battlefield is covered in trenches. Neither side was able the push forward at the time. When Parker looked up on the trench he was staying, he saw nothing new. Bombers roaming about, corpses, firing here and there. It was just like the second world war.

"Everyone get up! " he said. After they bombarded the enemy with rains of mortar shells, they began their push. With his M1 Garand, Parker killed with continous consecutive shots. Just as he flanked a machinegun emplacement, his sneaky actions were compromised.

He was hit in the head by a rifle's grip. It caused him to lose balance, but not enough to knock him out. He countered it by pulling out his sidearm, and placing a hole in the Northern soldier's head. But just as he got up, he knocked down again by another soldier, forcing his bayonet in Parker's neck. Lucky, he had enough strength to hold it of, but not for long.

By the second, he felt the knife slowly getting nearer and nearer to his neck. For the first time, he felt fear. Fear that he may not keep his promise to Violet. His hands were shaking. Just as the attacker was about to get a grip, a knife bursted his neck open. Showers of blood went in Parker's face, and the corpse fell dead on top of him.

He shoved it away, "Thanks... " he said to man that just saved him as he got up. But the guy just stood there, continuously firing at enemies, ignoring him

"Fear... " the man said

"Huh? "

"Let me show you the true meaning of fear! "

Before he knew it, he felt something familiar with this man, "This vibe... " he thought. A tall slender, yet agile figure, a murderous aura, and red bloodthirsty eyes, "Müller! "

Peter jumped into a trench, but when Parker followed, he mysteriously disappeared, "He did joined the war, as they believed... "

Night fell, Parker looked for Peter, but he was nowhere to be found. He checked every camp, but he was unlucky, "Have you seen a guy named, Peter? " he asked some of the men he saw Peter was with a while ago

"Peter? Peter what, Lieutenant? " they asked

"Peter Müller. I saw him with your division just a while ago. "

"No... We know no Peter Müller, sir! "

"But- " then he remembered something, "He might've used his fake name. " he remembered hearing Scarlett calling him "Scott", "Then do know someone named Scott? "

"Scott? Oh! The one with red eyes? "

"Yeah... Yes! That's him! "

"He haven't returned yet, sir! But he's alive and well. He's been reporting time to time, 'cause he's scouting nonstop. "

"Huh? Nonstop? "

Peter returned to being a bloodthirsty monster, killing everything in sight. He was scouting ahead all night, and killing helpless Northern Koreans gasping for breathe in the battlefield, "I'll kill you all...! "

The following day, the fierce battle ravaged again. This time, luck was not with Parker. He never caught sight of Peter. For three whole days, not a shadow was seen, but he was hearing about him from his division. He was reporting enemy emplacements and camps, so the following day, they have precise targets for mortar shells.

Around the fourth day, he caught sight of a figure covered in soil, charging at the enemy alone, "Peter! Get back here! " he yelled. Then he watched Peter endlessly showered by machinegun bullets, "Peter! " just as he thought Peter was killed, he saw him come out of an abandoned trench, and relentlessly threw grenades at the enemy.

Three machinegun emplacements are taken out. Peter caught the focus of the North Koreans, and was taking all enemy fire, "He's taking all the fire, let's go! " Parker and his division came out of hiding and charged forward. But as they got up the hill, most of them got killed. Enemy anti-air guns, was firing at them! The sandbags piled around them was not enough to block the high-caliber guns, so he retreated on the slope of the hill

"Wait, where's he?! " when he took a peek from where he was, he saw Peter fearlessly charging the enemy. Carrying only a rifle, a satchel charge, and himself, he sent everyone he passes through, to hell. When he exhausted his bullets, he only have the bayonet on his rilfle as weapon.

This scene was like something he saw a few years ago. Similar to when Peter annihilated his entire company on the frozen hills. It was a scene of unimaginable carnage, Peter ripping off flesh of every man going offensive against him. When he reached the anti-air defense, he skewered everyone with his bayonet and detonated the battery with the satchel charge.

"H-He's a monster... " Parker though. Just as Peter stood for a while to catch his breathe, out of nowhere, a sniper struck him, "Peter! "

Late at night, when Peter opened his eyes, he was in the camps. He turned his head and saw Parker, "You awake? " Peter didn't reply, and he got up. But he fell down as soon as he regained balance, "Stay down you idiot! You're wounded! " Parker scolded

"Get off... I have work to do. "

"Get out there, you'll be dead meat. "

"So what?! "

"Sigh... Violet and Scarlett told me to bring you back alive. "

"...?! "

"One more thing, you didn't keep your promise to Scarlett. It was your brother who was there on graduation day. " Peter was silent. He did remembered that he promised Scarlett about it, but he never showed up.

Tears suddenly flowed from his eyes, "W-What did she say? "

"She kept asking why haven't you showed up, and why'd you suddenly disappear. " he said it in a sad tone to make Peter even more regret his actions, "She got depressed and refused to eat for days. "

In rage, Peter threw the tent beside him a few yards away, exposing two couple soldiers doing it roughly, "I uh... Sorry 'bout that! " Parker said, then he dragged Peter away.

For three years, the Korean War ravaged. One day, there was a thick fog. What more, it was awfully quiet in the battlefield. Parker, Peter, and both their divisions are set on guard as they slowly advanced. Then a while later, they heard something whirring through the air, "Incoming! " Parker yelled. Before they knew it, they were being bombarded with relentless rains of artilleries.

Parker's division went to take cover in a nearby trench, but Peter's division was exposed in the open! When Parker peeked, he saw Peter standing alone in the middle. He fell on his knees realizing his entire division was wiped out in an instant,, with him the only survivor.

"Oi! Peter! Get in here! " at the same time, the fog cleared. Up on the hill, he saw a man holding a flag of their army. Then he yelled on the top of his lungs, running towards them. Behind him following, were hundreds of hundreds North Korean soldiers!

"Retreat! Retreat! Everyone retreat! " Parker yelled. At the same time, Peter went back to his senses, and also ran back. Parker's entire division ran back, chased by the Northern's army. At the same time, they were also being bombarded with storms of mortar shells.

Parker, who was making occasional stops to check whether there were any injured man unable to run, himself got shot in the leg. Amidst hurt badly, he continued to run. Alas, another bullet struck his injured leg. He fell immobilzed in the ground. Again he felt fear, making him unable to move.

Then suddenly he was dragged away to the direction where he was headed. It was Peter! He came back for him, "You idiot! Do you wanna get killed?! "

"Shut up... " then they hid behind a sandbag wall. Peter unpacked his bag, as Parker took a peek,

"Oi! We can't stop here! They'll get us for sure! " when he turned his head, he saw Peter Müller dressed in the black German uniform. Beside him are his rifles, sub-machineguns, grenades, and an MG42 machinegun. Hanging on his neck, are two belts of machinegin bulellets, "Oi, where'd you get that? "

"Is this huge bag of mine for nothing? "

"Whatever! We can't stay here! "

"Sure you can't stay, not to mention your leg is shot. " he said loading up the machinegun

"What do you mean? "

"Leave now... I don't know how long I'm able to hold these bastards off, but you'll be in a safe distance, just after I exhausted every bullet I have. "

"Idiot! A true soldier never leaves a man behind... "

"Blah, blah, blah... " said Peter as he removed his Iron Cross and forcefully placed it in Parker's hand, "Give that to Scarlett. And say to Violet that I'm sorry for everything. " then he lifted Parker and threw him on the slope of the hill.

"Oi-Ah! " Parker rolled down the hill, until two men, who risked their lives to wait for him, caught him and dragged him away, "Let go! There's someone still up there! "

"There's no time to save him, sir! I'm sorry! Let's go! Bombers are on their way! " they said

Parker saw Peter effectively holding off the enemy that was chasing them. Not a single one survived his bullet barrages, not until he saw him got struck somewhere in his upper body. He fell on the ground, "Peter! " again he saw his figure get up and continued firing.

Then he heard something rumbling from the clouds. Descended, bomber planes in position for a carpet bomb attack, "Hey! Stop! " to late, they dropped their bombs, the carpet of death slowly closing in on Peter.

The last thing he saw, was a North Korean soldier, attacking Peter with his bayonet. Peter evaded but it somehow made a cut in his face. Then the bombs finally dropped on his position. Parker passed out. After all, his injury is not only his leg.

When he woke up, he was in a hospital tent, "Where's Scott? " he asked as he got up

"Scott? You mean the red eyed guy, looking like a German? He went missing during the carpet bombing. Considering the situation, he's considered killed in action. I'm sorry. " said the chief doctor

Parker can't believe what he heard. He also promised of bringing back Peter, yet he failed. Then he remembered something. He searched for something in his pocket, "Looking for this? " the chief doctor handed him Peter's Iron Cross, "The men who brought you here, said you dropped that. Anyways, they have the same injuries as you have, but they didn't make it, I'm sorry too. "

Parker kept the medal and went to rest. A few days later, the war came to an end, neither side claiming victory.

Huh? No one is victorious?! Yep! None from both sides signed the word "Peace". All of Parker's hard work wasn't all that worth it, though he helped further loss of more lives.

Surviving american soldiers are now to be sent back to the United states. Parker still expected to see Peter, since he only went missing, but even until the troopship departed, he never heard news of him.

Meanwhile on the battlefield, search parties are scattered everywhere, "Hey! This guy is still warm! And I got a faint heartbeat! " one of them said

They covered the deep cut in his face, which is still slightly bleeding, "Is it just me, or he really looks like a German? "

"He must be the one they call, Scott! "

"Enough talk! This one's a priority! Send him back to the hospital tents, immediately! "

"A priority?! Have you ever heard of a triage? He'll be dead before we even get him back! "

After a long travel, Parker landed back on his homeland. He mailed Violet in advance, so he was expecting to see her on the train station. On the train late at night, Parker felt Peter's Iron Cross in his pocket, "How am I to explain this to Scarlett? " he thought. He expected for the worse reaction of her.

The following day, the train arrived. He was not the only one who had their loved ones waiting for them. Tears are flowing in every direction. Tears of joy to those who still have a complete family, and of sorrow to those who only expected, but never seen their beloved ones again.

Parker knew it was both of joy and of sorrow are to flow before him. But the first thing he did, was look for his fiancé. At the back of the crowd was a sweet young lady, in her lovely dress, waiting, "Violet! " he called

"D-Darling? " when she saw who it was, tears came rolling down her face, "Darling! Darling! Darling! You came back, Darling! " Violet never parted this long from Parker, so she was more than happy when they reunited.

"Mr. Doss? " called a voice. Parker looked and saw Scarlett, behind her was Otto, "Welcome back! " she said cheerfully

"Damn you, brother! You never said you'll be joining the war! I should've signed up again! "

"Anyways, who told you to retire? "

"Where's Peter? " Scarlett asked. Parker felt like his heart was crushed to tiny pieces, seeing Scarlett's face. It looked like she had high hopes of seeing her fiance again, nothing did she know...

Parker slowly took out Peter's Iron Cross, that is slightly drenched in blood, and handed it to her, "I'm sorry... "

Scarlett's face fell, "No... This is not true... This is not true! No! This isn't true! "

"You idiot! " Otto shook Parker, "Why'd you did let him...! Why did you... Why... " he slowly lost his grip on Parker, and fell on his knees before him

"Darling, did brother Peter really...? "

Parker embraced her, "I'm sorry. I couldn't save him. To be honest, he was the one who saved me. "

Otto ran, and locked himself in their home, while Scarlett fainted. Parker and Violet had to send her to her villa, "Daughter! What has happened to my daughter?! " her father panicked

"Her fiancé was killed in action... I'm sorry... " answered Parker

"Peter? That kid? Killed in action? " he wasn't sure to be delighted or to be sorrowful. He might be the one who nearly took his life, but it was who his daughter loves. What now, that he's gone?

It was sure a very sad day for both Scarlett and Otto...
