Intuitions of War

Chapter 10: Turning point

*Translated to English*

"Crap, they did know about ou-!" A German german soldier began screaming before taking a bullet to the head, and hitting the ground right after.

The Germans were in a terrible situation, as they were pinned down by the enemies. The enemies seemed to be on a hill past the forest, but the forest was also littered with British soldiers hidden behind trees.

Meanwhile, they were just on the coast with no cover.

"Fifty soldiers need to head out and flank to the right, now!" The squadron leader yelled out, and many of the German soldiers obeyed and began running to the right flank.

'Even if they flank, at the very minimum, we have to hold out for at least a minute…!' The squadron leader wasn't very confident in holding out for so long, or at least, holding out for so long without losing too many soldiers.

'Think, think, think…' He didn't know what to do, but then it struck him that the best he could do was to try and retreat.

"Everybody, try and get back to the boats, their bullets can break us but not them!" The squadron leader yelled out, and turned tail and began running towards one of the boats. Most of the German soldiers also began running back, but of course, there were some who couldn't hear the squadron leader throughout the shooting, and then there were many who were dead and shot up.

'If we can get to the boats, we can meet up with the German soldiers coming in from the North Sea, and focus all of our manpower into forcing our way in from that direction!' At this point, that was the most they could do, now that the British knew they were coming.

'Wait, they'll also know we're infiltrating from the North Sea, won't they?' The squadron leader thought to himself while leaping into one of the boats. However, while mid-leap, something unexpected happened.

*BANG*

"Gyah-!" The squadron leader yelled out in agony, the pain quite existing. He took a bullet to the knee, while mid-leap, though he still made it onto the boat.

"Crap, someone get on here and drive this thing!" The squadron leader yelled out, and luckily, two soldiers did manage to get on his boat.

"Book it before we get sh-"

*BANG*

The Squadron leader began, before a bullet pierced through the chest of one of the men standing in front of him. The squadron leader turned towards the remaining one, though the soldier already knew what to do, and began maneuvering the boat out of the area.

"How many boats are behind us?!" The squadron leader yelled out, just so his voice could get past the sound of still shooting bullets.

"Uhhhh…. Around ten boats sir!" The soldier yelled back, a grim tone beginning to set in.

'...Ten? We came in here with a fleet of thirty, yet we seem to have fallen to less than half?' The squadron leader was surprised at the incident, not knowing how these results came about, but then he realized why.

"Crap! I sent out fifty to flank who are still on the island!" The squadron leader realized what was wrong, and began pulling himself up. He pulled himself up high enough so that he could look behind the boat, and what he saw was somewhat pitiful.

The German soldiers he had instructed to flank the enemy to were either trying to run to the boats, or were trying to follow through with the flank.

"Crap, crap, crap!" The squadron leader couldn't believe it, wouldn't believe it.

The German army had actually lost to such a pitiful little resistance from the Brits!

'What'll I tell the commander? God damn-!' He began thinking about excuses before he realized what he had to do.

"Contact the squadron that's about to attack from the North Sea. If they still haven't reached the shore, tell them to turn back and meet up with us on the east side of the English Channel!" The squadron leader yelled out, his mind kicking back in.

'That's right, we still have a chance to win. The traitor leaked information, but only the information he knew about. We'll raid the Brits from the west, where they won't expect it. If my squadron and the other squadron works together, we can still do this.' This was a desperate last shot he was attempting, but it was better than going back empty-handed.

'At the very least, we'll trash the city of London!'

"Ok, got it!" The soldier contacting the other squadron said, and slammed the radio down.

"They said they understand and will meet up with us in the area." The German soldier said calmly, now that the bullets were very far and quiet.

"Good, we won't stop here." The squadron leader said while gesturing for the soldier to come and check out his leg.

'We… protected it?' Caecca was confused as to how in the world they just defended the coast. He was ready to sacrifice himself and his soldiers to weaken the enemies a bit, but in reality, only two soldiers were injured, and the rest were just fine!

'Wait a minute… the Germans won't give up that quickly!' Caecca immediately realized what was going on, and stood up.

"Everybody, we have to head to the North Sea! Get the boats, now!" Caecca immediately yelled out, and everyone began to get to work, except for Lucy.

"What's wrong lucy? We have to go now!" Caecca was confused by her actions.

'Why in the hell is she not moving? The whole country is at risk!'

"About that, I don't think we should head to the North Sea." Lucy said, and Caecca was fully confused.

"What do you mean?" Caecca asked, trying to get an explanation.

"Now that we intersected the Germans, they must know that we somehow have information about their plans. In that case, it's highly possible that they are going to make a new plan on the spot, and try to pull it off. It's either that or they're retreating, but it's the Germans we're talking about, so retreating is basically off the table." Lucy explained her reasoning, and Caecca understood.

'That's right, we're not the only people with brains. Underestimating the Germans will dearly cost us… They probably aren't going to the North Sea, but are likely to head to either Scotland or enter from the west side of the island.' Caecca, now given the wisdom of Lucy's thoughts, began to really think about what to do.

"The best thing we can do right now is to move back into London, and double, no, triple the amount of soldiers protecting the city. If we don't do that, we have no idea about what the Germans will do, so we would be like chickens without heads, going around trying to find the Germans." Lucy explained her idea, and Caecca understood her.

'That's right, we don't have much of a choice right now unless we want to take a stab in the dark, which will put London at risk.' Caecca settled on Lucy's idea, and sighed.

"Everyone, forget what I just said! We'll head back to London now, so pack up the stuff and throw it on the boats, we're heading back in through the river!" Caecca immediately yelled out, and turned around.

'I just hope the soldiers at the North Sea are fine…'

*The next morning*

"Well, time to get a move on." Harper said to himself, and woke up from the field he went to sleep on.

He was getting pretty close to Newgate, or at least he thought so. He was basing all of this on the journey that he went on from Newgate to Glasgow.

'What a waste of time that was, I ended up coming right back.' Harper wished he would've just stayed at Newgate or went to another place within England.

"Come on, at this point, it's only a few more hours until I make it to Newgate and see the destruction." Harper pushed himself up, and brushed himself off. He then got back on the dirt path, and began jogging again.

'Once I get there, I need to find a way to help the British army, though I don't know how. I don't expect myself to be good on a battlefield, so maybe something related to delivering intel?' Harper didn't exactly know what he was going to do, just that he was going to do something, and that he would make it count.

'Now that I think about it, I've been training my legs quite a bit, I wonder if there's anything related to running around like a chicken without a head?' Harper began to dream of such an easy job. Of course, no job related to the war was easy, but it was easier than most jobs relating to the war.

It was a sunny day, all the clouds were gone. His brown hair was shining pretty decently, and his slim body was shown for what it really was.

A bunch of bones.

'I thought I had black hair before? Must be the dirt.' Harper took into mind just how much he has changed during Newgate. He was somewhat stronger, though that was only when it came to the lower body, and his hair color changed not from changing it himself, but through dirt and other rummel.

'Though, I'm still a pile of bones.' One of the few things that hadn't changed was how much food he was eating a day. When it came to eating food, he was only eating once every day or two, and it was even worse with water. To be honest, he just felt that he was getting strong with his lower body, he didn't know if he was getting stronger at all.

'I'm so hungry, yet nobody who has the resources is willing to share with me. I' ma have to rob somebody.' Harper thought to himself, and began running faster to Newgate.

'The first thing I'll do once I'm there is find someone I can rob if there are people remaining, and rob 'em good.' Harper, with an empty stomach and a full brain, set out on a full dash on this dirt path.

'After that, I'll head to London, and finally, begin what I want to do.'
