Chapter 35 - Inspiring Speech

"Kill him." With a single order, the old guard brought their spear and execute the command. The young farmhand on the other hand was surprise, they hesitate, but with a single glance from Varsas, they was cowered into obeying. If the Gungnir land was to grow, the future generation needs to be prepared too.

Something likes that also happened sometime in the past. A boy barely 18 of age looks up at Varsas Gungnir who was 27 then. He was hesitating in the face of the final battle with Varsas-reon. And most likely he was right about hesitating. The one who go first usually die, the young will usually die first too, being that they lack the experience for what await them. But at that moment, Varsas couldn't let him falter, it would have set a bad example, causing the rest of the world army to falter. If Varsas Gungnir agreed to let a young lad runs away from responsibility, then what about them?

Varsas talked the young man into committing. It was a great speech for sure, inspiring many generation to fight forward. However, at the end of the day, when Varsas looked up the boy's name, it seems he died.

There aren't good or evil in a war, only that you survive. However, in that situation, and in this too, Varsas felt like he was the bad guy. For his demand, young people go and die for him. Even in this situation, Varsas could have gone and personally killed Shadow, the spymaster from Mahaima. However he decided to let the farmhand do it, he is building a small force to protect his ancestral land, even if he is gone, he expects them to be able to hold down the fort before he returns. So that the nightmare of the past won't repeat again...

"Wait-" The spymaster of Mahaima has a look of indignant in his eyes. It was fake, as expect of someone who was a spy all his life. Their eyes meet with the spymaster saying 'Do you know who you are messing with?'. In fact, the spymaster probably already expected his death. Both of them could feel it.

At a single moment before the finale, Shadow tries to kill Varsas. If it was just regular espionage or self defense, he could have lived. However, that was not it, that strike was delivered with deadly intense, it was a deliberate intense, with the spymaster recognizing Varsas as the heir of the Gungnir.

That man always thinks further than what is expected of him. And that is why Varsas and Shadow would never be on the same wave length. Even when he was cornered, the thought on his mind was probably: the Gungnir family is getting in the way of Mahaima's authority, it would be best to cut off their seemingly military-minded heir before they become a threat in the future. It could have worked if Varsas was the same young man he was years ago. In that case they may have a different situation, but could have, should have is not the same as reality.

The man is too dangerous, his thought alone was dangerous. It was a last gambit on the spymaster part, but Varsas called it

"Do it."

They stab him in formation.

...

Varsas walks away from the mess while the other spies are captured for interrogation. It is not like there was anyone currently in the Gungnir's land capable of interrogation anyway, and more likely due to their unique power, containment is going to be near impossible. Varsas gives it three days before they escape, but that is fine. The old guard suggest crippling them so that they could not escape, but he vetoed it. That would just create unnecessary resentment among the special force of Mahaima and my lead to actual conflict in the future. Killing a killer with actual killing intent is different from killing captured prisoner and maiming them.

"Are you okay?"

Lufa in her maid costume was actually busy at the moment. Because the mistress of the house was current unconscious, the servants of the house are very busy, even Lufa who wasn't actually a servant, was also forced to work. She only has to do the cleaning in the guests room because she was too scary for the other servants to deal with, but she still has to do work all the same.

"I was dealing with some nuisance." Varsas told her that.

"...Your face is looking quite scary right now."

"Is it?" Varsas acts surprise.

"Suddenly you act as if your heart is hurting, and now your face is scaring me right now."

Varsas raises a placating hand

"It is just a side effect. I am expected to live into the hundred, these matter of the heart, even if it is an attack, I have way to handle it." Even without my stepmother's help is left unsaid. He was still bitter after that

"Don't tell me you meddle with the alchemical potion again! Mistress says it leads down to some scary path. Don't tell me outside of 'turning human into chimera' potion, there is also a 'heart attack stopping' potion too? Or did you merge your heart with an animal or something?"

"...You are saying as if that is a bad thing. If I actually make something like that, it would be hailed as a miracle of medicine you know." He doesn't know why his stepmother treats Varsas's hobby as something so bad.

"Anyway, it is not something like that. It is pure discipline."

"Pure discipline?"

"My body responses to my will and none other. I force the heart muscle to contract and relax at specific interval of time. It is like the basic footman's heartbeat control exercise, but in this case, it is a conscious decision, and I have more control."

"...Everytime you open your mouth, I heard another ridiculous thing. Are you even human?"

After some small talk, Varsas turns away and frowns again. Another wave was coming, he could control it for now. However, he really needs to get down to the root of his mysterious phenomenon.

...In the old day, it was easier. If something like this happens, and he was alone, it was as simple as killing everything in the surrounding area, kill everything, destroy every suspicious object. But currently he is within his own home.

He could also go somewhere else for the time, however at this important time, how could he go? He feels like losing if that happens, leaving his sick mother alone.

Just like always, the heir of the Gungnir family continues to walk forward, alone.

"Varsas Gungnir..."

A voice come out within the Gungnir estate, but no one heard.
