Chapter 27 - Alpha Strike

"What do you mean you have been to the capital of both Mahaima and Lanton? You fuck. I should have known!"

Lufa starts throwing hits like a child with a tantrum. Though in this specific case, if any of that hit a normal person, it would have been quite dangerous.

Dangerous as in they would have a funeral with close casket.

"Come on now, that was just for fun, though the fun quickly degraded into such a mess."

Varsas's voice turns grave at the last part.

At the time, due to him wanting to conceal his identity as well as needing to deal with the prime minister of Lanton afterward, he let the other guy get away. He was holding back but so was the other guy anyway.

And in the aftermath of the battle, the last attack the other party used actually hurt.

"Varsas, this cannot continue anymore. You have your fun, but the situation is quickly spiraling out of control. Who know what party went back in time. They may mean well, or they may not. This is not a situation that you know anymore. You cannot just stick your head into the sand and do nothing."

If the world continues as it did in the original timeline, everything would have been fine. Or at least that is what Varsas predicted. However if other parties from the future interfere, it may end up worse than the original timeline.

While he didn't tell anyone, originally, the plan was to distant himself from the war and when Varsas-reon's infant form appear for the first time, destroy it prematurely. After that he can safely brush his hand off all the other business. He was sick of war anyway. It is always a conflict between two sides, and they make you choose.

Without fame or any deeds of note, Varsas-reon wouldn't resemble Varsas and the battle to come wouldn't be as hard as the original battle. No one would know of him and drag him into that destructive war either, and in the end, it may actually end up less destructive.

But, it actually turns out like this.

"In light of the situation, can you tell me what you have prepared?"

Lufa starts tapping her foot impatiently, like she was a much older mature woman looking down on a child who did something wrong. Well she is older if we count the time she has lived in this world, but physically and mentally? Varsas very much doubts it.

"I have been writing threatening letters to certain important people who has the ability to wrap thing up. Nothing serious, only enough to kick them into awareness to deal with whatever situations may transcend. It is like kicking the hornet nest to deal with a pack of starving wolves chasing you. In this case the wolves are after the hornets too, it is just that the hornets do not know about it."

And now they know there are something after them out there. Varsas could do it personally too, but it is better to leave it to the professional.

The starting cost was high at the start, but it is worth it.

...

In the middle of the night, the Dragon King, overlord of the Dragon land in the south woke up covered in sweat.

This is certainly one of the rare time he has ever felt something like this. Instantly he realizes something was wrong. It was that prodigious sense of danger of his that allows him to survive that long.

He stares down at his chest. Instead of a weapon being thrust at him like he fears, an inconspicuous piece of paper is lying there. It was in the middle of the night, there was no one else in his room for the Dragon King prefers sleeping alone.

There was no guard because the king himself is the last line of self defense.

However, he completely failed to detect anything that happens at this moment.

Slowly he unfolds the paper lying on his chest. It is not poison, that much he realizes. If it was, they would have poisoned him already.

On the paper, there is only a single line, and that line read

"The Southern Flame will rise again."

A warning, no, a taunt.

Rage flashes in the eyes of the dragon king, he crumbles the paper.

That whole night, a dragon roar resounds over the entire Dragon Palace, scaring the servants senselessly.

"They are saying they can get to me at anytime. They are threatening me. ME."

The Dragon King instantly rushes out of his bed room and into the armory. He puts on his armor and screams orders at the abruptly awaken generals.

"Prepare the troops. We have rats to smoke out."

...

"It honestly cost quite a lot to hire someone with the abilities to poke a dragon."

Lufa stares at him without understanding anything.

"If it was that guy, even I would have some trouble."

The Dragon King of the south. He was an ally once upon a time.

He is actually a dragon. Even though he was an ally, he was a dragon from head to toes. Sitting at 55 meters long, he was on the small side of dragons, but no one dare to tell him that. He was large, he was powerful, with a temper to match that. He was absolutely arrogant too, Varsas first meet him after the Dragon King met an unsightly fate under the hand of the Pyromancer of the south. It was absolutely due to his arrogance. He had half of his body burned off when Varsas first met him even though he was a dragon. Despite that, he still stands up to the challenge and reclaims his land even with that body after the Pyromancer has taken it after the Pyromancer rebellion.

The tale of the Dragon land of the south is another senseless story of war. In the first place it was the Pyromancer's sacred land of fire due to the whole land's affinity to fire. The dragons later found the land to their liking as the warmth of the land help with the incubation of dragon's egg, who has a large problem with birthing before. Usually the dragon egg end up stillbirth before they found the Pyromancer's sacred land. The dragons start descending en masse, finally finding their ideal holy land. The Pyromancer was pushed out, and in rage, they committed a great act of atrocity, burning all the dragons' eggs to ash as the last act of defiance. The dragons became angered and started massacring Pyromancers everywhere. In Varsas time, the Pyromancers returned one again and with even greater fire power this time, pushed out the dragon, burning even dragon scale. And then the Dragon King managed to stand back up and fight them off.

Both sides just keep committing atrocities on each other time and time again.

That matter aside, the Dragon King was only one of the person who Varsas riles up with his vaguely threatening letters.

"Anyway, as I was saying, you need to do something more drastic. Outside of you, other people may have also traveled back in time. But the difference between you and them is that they don't know that you have also traveled back yet. We can just alpha strike them before they become an issue. I would check back with my people to see if there are any unnatural sight in the human world, but after the inconsistencies have been found-

You can end them, can't you?"

...

The discussion went nowhere because Lufa was too excited and drastic with the plans she proposes. She wants full frontal confrontation and more involvement with the state of the world while Varsas wants to stay out of that. He honestly thought small gestures like the letters are enough to change thing without getting personally involved.

The problem is that what Lufa and him want are completely different and that cause the meeting to come to a stand still. She promises that she would get in contact with her people, and perhaps Varsas's adopted mother, so something may come out of this yet.

Even so

"Alpha strike huh?...." Varsas mutters, toying with the idea. He really wanted to be left alone.

Varsas hoists the spear on his side and starts walking back to the house. His mother greets him at the door with a smile

"Back from training?"

The scene is supposed to bring a smile to Varsas's face. This is supposed to be his ideal life, what he strives for. A happy family, a world where both his mother and father are alive.

However he can only stand stock still, a frown on his face.

His whole body tenses.

A shadowy figure walks out from the garden behind him. That figure wasn't there before during the talk between him and Lufa. That person just got there recently.

"Varsas...?" His mother asks, seeing that something is wrong.

"Varsas Gungnir..." The figure mutters.

'Don't you da-'

Before he can response, the figure has already approached and thrown a fist at his stomach, just a few meters from Varsas's mother.

At that moment, what was on Varsas's mind was

'Alpha strike huh...?'
