Chapter 77 - Portion 11: The Box

Lucas Dow's POV

I could not believe that tonight will be the night that I have to work the night shift. I mean, come on, it was not like the cat burglar or The Woman in Gold will be coming here. It was an eventful night and people will be crowding the place.

"I still don't get it why we have to work overtime right now," I mumbled before Harriet was looking sharply at me.

"If you recall, Mr. Dow, we do not need the help from an organization as if we're not capable of doing this thing by ourselves. I can assure you that we're not that weak you know," he said as I was holding my hands up for surrender.

"Okay, sorry," I said before we were into the basement as I was looking around. I was remembering the moment where I was here with Ari last time and it put a smile on my face.

"Something to share with me, Mr. Dow?" Harriet said before I was turning to look at him. I shook my head.

"Nothing, I was just getting used to this kind of stuff right now," I said as I was looking around with the sarcophagi that were hanging around and the tarps that covered them up. Then, I found something underneath the tarp.

I was blinking a few times before I was looking at the odd-looking box before I was taking it into my hands. I was dusting a bit before Harriet was taking the box from me.

"Please, do not touch anything that was yours," he said before I was rolling my eyes at him.

"It's just that the box was not here earlier," I said before Harriet was looking at me, arching his eyebrow at me.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, that box was not in here when I was in this basement with Ari a few days ago. So I was wondering if anyone has put it in here and to think that it was hidden beneath the tarp," I said as I was trying to get the box from Harriet but he was not having it.

"I don't need this mess right now. If you want to look at this box, you can do so tomorrow. For now, we have to get ready for the gala tomorrow. And I want you to check all the spots that the thief might be coming for the gems," Harriet said before I was nodding at him curtly.

"As you wish," I said before Harriet was leaving me alone to do my work. I was looking around the basement before I was putting on my gloves.

"Looks like I have to do this quicker than I thought to get through before the night is over," I mumbled as I was working hard to get to all the spots that might be lurking our elusive thief and how she can get inside this building in the first place.

After a few moments of spending myself in the basement and other spots that I might think the thief will be using, I was about to leave before I was hearing distinct footsteps as I was walking down the empty corridor. Harriet was not here anymore as he told me to lock up the museum.

Could it be?

I was walking down toward the distinct voices before I was drawing the pistol that I carried around on my hips. It's not for show as I was a good marksman, thanks to my life as being a rebellious orphan and my family lawyer had put me through some summer camps to control the anger that I have as a youth.

I was inching closer and closer as I was looking at the shadows that were moving across the room. I was sneaking up against the elusive thief as I know that it would not be good for me if I make a sound.

The element of surprise was my advantage right now.

I was taking a deep breath before I was pulling out of the hiding spot that I was waiting for the right moment to step out from the shadows.

"Freeze!" I said as I was looking at the thief. And to my disappointment, it was not the Woman in Gold. It was a woman that adorned black clothing.

Black shirt.

Black pants.

Black mask.

"Well, if it was not for the Interpol agent that will be catching my friend," she said with a feminine voice. I was looking at her as she was sitting on the walls right now.

"Your friend?" I asked before something was coming from behind and I was being knocked out of my place as something, or rather someone was throwing stuff into my face.

"Hey!" It was like glue as I was trying to get it off from my face. The feminine voice clicked as I was trying to hear on their conversation. But, unfortunately, they were in Italian.

Which was not my specialty, maybe Scott's but not the rest of us; Conall, Edmond, and me.

I was trying to get the thing off as I heard some clacking and kicking as well as laughter in the museum. I was trying to get to my feet before I was hitting something and I was knocked down on my butt twice.

"Damn it," I cursed before I was pulling the stuff and it was out of my face, and before I knew it, I was coming face to face with the cat burglar that I have meaning to meet.

"Chrysi Gynaika,'' I mumbled before I was looking at the yellow dress that she adorned and the yellow mask as she was smirking at me.

"It seems that Fate wants us to meet, after all, Detective Dow," the Woman in Gold said as her sultry voice was hypnotizing me before I was gripping my hands into fists.

"You, stop right there!" I said as I was scrambling to my feet before the Woman in Gold was smirking at me.

"Catch me if you can," she said before she was taking something out. I cannot see enough before I was looking at the device. It was a hook and she was about to make her escape.

"Don't you dare!" I shouted before I was running toward her as Chrysi Gynaika was flying kissed me with her hand.

"I see you around, detective," she said before she was out of the museum as I was huffing heavily. I was raking my hands through my hair before I was looking around. There was no one here and no one will believe that I failed to protect the gems when there were two cat burglars that attacked the museum tonight.

I sighed before I went to check on the gems that were on display. Thankfully, nothing was missing but I wondered what was the real target of those two cat burglars. And the Black Mask said that she was a friend to the Woman in Gold.

I think I have found a loophole to catch Chrysi Gynaika.

Arianna Contos' POV

I was huffing before I was pacing back and forth in my room. I was raking through my hair with my hands as I cannot believe that box was gone.

The Citrine of Greece was gone!

I was looking around before I felt the eyes of my best friend, Jenny, was looking at my head.

"What?" I asked her angrily before Jenny smirked at me.

"Well, I must say that your first meeting was not what I would be expecting. It seems that you are in a bad mood," she said as I was glaring at her.

"Thank you for the obvious observation. Now, tell me, where was that box that you claimed it was still there when you went last night," I said as I was looking at Jenny while crossing my hands at her. She shrugged.

"How should I know? If anything, it should be your responsibility when during the day, you're the one that has access to it,"

"I left it the way it was. I never go to the basement again after that afternoon with him," I said as I was trying to think another possibility that might be happening.

"What if?" Jenny said before I was turning sharply at her. She closed her mouth immediately.

"Well, there will be only one way to find out," I said as I was looking at the walls that were leading to the room next door.

Lucas Dow's room.

"I still don't think that it would be a good idea for you to sneak in right now. What if he was on the way here right now?" Jenny said as she was holding my rope before I was about to make a jump to Lucas Dow's room.

"I don't think he will be. He has a lot of question and I know for a fact that he will try to find the answers to all of his questions in mind," I said before Jenny was arching her eyebrow at me. I rolled my eyes at her.

"It seems that you have a particularly keen on this man," she said smugly. I scowled at her.

"I was not," I said before I was about to leap, the door of the room was opening and I can see that Lucas was coming into the room.

"Shit," I said before I was scrambling to the floor as I was releasing the rope. I was laying on the floor of Lucas's room before he was going into the small kitchen that he had in the room. I sighed a relief but it was short-lived.

"Ari? What are you doing here?" Lucas asked me as he was opening the sliding door and I was staring up at him when I was laying on the floor.

Okay, I am officially doomed.
